More info on the snow melt...

The small ice pellets that fell (polystyrene!) have not melted but the fluffy snowflakes on the same area have now gone.

Contrary to my last report the next shower is about to descend upon us.

Looks like polystyrene again!!!

Very odd, considering the really cold uppers are now getting over us!

Going to be a useful set of 12z data coming in. Most here would be wanting GEM to continue on its 00z - gave upwards of 15cm widely across the Midlands by Saturday.

I would be giving most value to Hirlam and Arpege in this scenario where the low is coming up from the south.

Another very heavy snow shower passing through Nottingham, whiteout conditions again with massive flakes, settling everywhere but when the Sun comes out, anything not in shade vanishes. Lets hope these showers carry on after dark as Nottingham could get a decent covering tonight if they do, as they are that heavy

V heavy showers passing here with whiteout blizzard conditions at time with just over an inch lying now.

Whiteout here in Matlock, looks like it intensified fairly quickly on radar, plenty more showers coming in from the east

Snow and hail together here or at least icy pellets as some of it is quite hard and makes popping sounds on the window as well as the fluffy flakes.

Is it graupel? Sounds like it and that would fit with very cold uppers, wouldn't it?

Another heavy snow shower here and it's actually starting to pile up a bit in places protected from the sun.

Seems the bbc weather radar has gone poof due to high demand!

Maps outage

Due to unprecedented levels of demand on our website we have temporarily replaced some of the less visited pages and unfortunately are currently unable to provide our usual weather and observation maps

Heavy shower just come through Derby area, looked like polystyrene balls or soft hail to give it another

name, Temp keeps fluctuating, last hour -2C then up to 0C, bright sunshine once again so snow

has no chance of hanging around but at least we are seeing it falling so happy with that:yahoo:

Heavy snow here in Nottingham, settles slightly then melts in the sun. We’ve also had the polystyrene balls (which I last experienced in Surrey in December 2010!)

It's like a battle between the air and the sun. App says it's -1'C but it feels so warm in the sun. Snow sticks instantly but goes as soon as the sun hits it. Another shower approaching at the moment.
