I see the Moray Firth Unicorn is alive and well (kicking, in fact) this morning.

Quite a draught blowing through any unsealed cracks.

Out of interest HC, what did you get from the new year 09 event? Delivered a foot to low level Inverness. Didn't join here until a few 2010 so missed all the fun

It got very cold at the end of December (a couple of ice days and thick hoar frost) but we escaped down south at New Year. It was still very cold when we returned but I don't remember much snow, either here or where I was working , which was the middle of Sutherland. The rivers were frozen and deer were at the roadsides eating salty grass.

edit - I don't mean no no, just not much no.

FKS - I mean not much snow! Brain disengaged this morning.

Seriously strong winds battering here at the minute, bins blowing over as bin day was yesterday, plenty debris in the air

Starting to snow quite heavily here, it shouldn’t come to much but nice to see :)

I have lost count how many days I have seen snow falling

Yep, snowing here too, a wee half hour of heavy snow would be nice before it turns back to rain

Possible snow event tomorrow into Friday morning?

Doesn't look like a lot but still could give a a few cm in places, with more over the western highlands ... againnn!

Here's euro4's latest take on it:

950's look good:

850's also look good:

dew points are really good too:

The latest GFS also showing the potential:

And metO Model must be singing from the same hymn sheet as my automated forecast has me in snow from 5pm Thursday til 3am Friday

IMG_8163.thumb.PNG.36c9d38d1f4e659c1e592b82cf6254ee.PNG

the conditions look really good, a lot less marginality than of late but the issue will be getting the precipitation in I think for the areas away from the western highlands. Still, at least there's a the possibility and another opportunity to watch the radar.

Snow's on here too, assume it's going to turn to rain, but nice to see. Amazing day at Nevis Range yesterday, proper powder and sunshine.

Mr Frost, lots of wise words about the dangers but my tip would be to go try things within your comfort zone and always be in control. So on a wild day try a wee hill with easy escape and see how the wind chill etc feel. Always carry more gear than you think you'll need and ALWAYS be prepared to turn back if you're not confident. My classic for wild weather (westerlies) is to try Ben Ledi where you climb the lower slopes in relative shelter and when you hit the ridge that's when you know if it is too wild to continue or not. Not recommending that (I have been wandering hills since 1980!) but something similar in your area might be appropriate.

Bit of snow blowing about here in town centre, which is a miracle in itself, would imagine it'll turn to rain as the day goes on.

Great work @Ruzzi but you forgot that all important wet baw freezing level :D....which you want to be at 200m or less to see snow at low levels. Looks good for southern and central Scotland though some less cold air for a time further north.

Drat your 'wet baws', that just made me dribble coffee on my keyboard. Never done that before, I thought it was just something idiots wrote cos they thought it sounded good.

Oh, errr...

The highlands must have some amount of snow now!

I am looking forward to when more settled weather comes in to do a bit of walking and hiking with my son.

Yes. Getting quite nicely consolidated too with some freeze/thaw cycles. I'm looking for a suitable day to get up a hill soon too, although it's looking a bit windy for the next few days.

The 00z GFS and now the 06z GFS show high pressure building towards Greenland around 7 days from now which is a great sign, the ECM however has other ideas.

If the GFS came off then I am sure we would see the return of @More Snow :D

Y'know I actually considered your wet baws and couldn't find it on weatheronline... where you've posted the chart from, so I'll have to go back and look again ?

But if the precipitation can penetrate in across the central belt etc then conditions do look good for some lying snow. Up north it'll be just adding to blanket

Light snow just starting to fall here,  not sure it'll come yo much as yesterday's remnants have been slowly thawing after an overnight frost. When I was out earlier it was 2C but bitterly cold in the wind.

If everything works out it looks like I'll be increasing my snow potential next winter. We sold our house recently and have had an offer accepted on another, so paperwork willing we move inland a bit (between Alford & Insch) and upwards a bit (230m) around the end of May. Oh and just for @Hairy Celt, I understand there's a snow blower in the garage. The current owners haven't needed it in the last 4yrs, but it was left by the ones before that.
