Ireland Regional Weather Discussion 16/01/2018 Onwards

I had a feeling this wasn't going to be much of an event. As per usual its all very marginal on whether it falls as snow/sleet or rain.

Driven from just outside Omagh to Limavady and nothing but some wintry showers. Think the BBC got it wrong. last night showed snow piling in throughout the day. Must be warmer than expected? Not too sure what to think about tomorrow. If today was too hard to call then tomorrow must be harder?

As i said before there is really to much faith in computers for these snowy days.

What we need is a big shower lasting 20-30 minutes to get a covering down.

Castlereagh Hills have a covering, as mentioned above, the showers are not nearly lengthy enough. 

Maybe we'll see heavier bursts later in the day.

There is likely to be an increase in snowfall amounts this evening, especially for parts of southern Scotland and Northern Ireland for which a separate Amber warning will be in force

Amber warning for this afternoon

Snow showers will be heavy and frequent through the rest of Tuesday, gradually easing off during the early hours of Wednesday, with a further slow improvement expected through Wednesday daytime, as showers become less heavy and less frequent. Some high ground is likely to see 15-25 cm building up, especially above 200-300 metres. At low levels throughout the warning area, 5-10 cm will be more typical. Showers will be accompanied by hail and lightning at times, while strong winds bring the potential for temporary blizzard conditions and drifting of lying snow, mainly over high ground.

I'm not in the Amber. If we don't see snow sticking by this afternoon we may as well give up.

Just need the low a little further South.

Snow showers will be heaviest and most frequent across western Scotland, where high ground is likely to see a further 10-20 cm building up above 200-300 metres. There may also be more than 15 cm over the high ground of Northern Ireland and northern England. At low levels, parts of the warning area will see 3-10 cm of snow, with some places near the west coast seeing very little. Showers will be accompanied by hail and lightning at times, particularly across western Scotland. Here, in particular, there is potential for disruption to power supplies from lightning strikes. Strong winds bring the potential for temporary blizzard conditions and drifting of lying snow, mainly over high ground.
