You always wonder when the BBC NEWS 24 weather only talks about tomorrows snow event and gives very little detail. Monday was not even mentioned.

Maybe there are developments, I wonder?

The latest metoffice forecast isn't overly inspiring:

North West England

Headline:

Cold tonight with a wet day in store for tomorrow

This Evening and Tonight:

A mostly clear night with light winds and temperatures readily falling to below freezing. Some low cloud may form over the hills with a few freezing fog patches likely in low-lying areas. Minimum temperature -5 °C.

Sunday:

Cloud, rain, and some snow will spread across the region. Snow is expected mainly over high ground and will turn to rain later on. Gradually becoming drier after dark. Maximum temperature 9 °C.

Tonight's forecast : wine chilling in the fridge  just had a cheeky swig followed by chicken in black bean sauce with egg fried rice. All the wine will be gone and I will blame that on evaporating cooling so if it does snow in the night I will no bugger all about it as I will be sozzled

Yeah, freezing rain could be a bigger problem in some places early on.

I think freezing rain will be a problem inland towards midday. There is a substantial layer about 925 mbar which remains below freezing most of the morning even whilst The layers above it are above freezing.  Once this is mixed out then  anywhere left where the surface temperature is still below freezing should get freezing rain, before that ice  pellets.

Latest EURO4 not keen on much snow away from high ground tomorrow which seems to tie in with the metoffice forecast. Looks like it may be the usual snow mainly above 200-300m with slushy deposits possible to lower level. However, will be interesting to see how it unfolds. Nothing is set in stone of course.

Well if nothing else, I’m very interested to see how this ice pellets/freezing rain potential unfolds. Had a similar thing on 25th Jan 2013.

It’s gone clear now, quite surprised as it was so cloudy only an hour or so ago. A bit of mist forming. Maybe the temps can get cold enough for tomorrow’s sleet fest as best ?

Unlike EURO4, 12z GFS and Arpege are both keen on a decent spell of snow across much of the region. I guess we should be following the high res precipitation models at this range. Fingers crossed the GFS and Arpege trump the EURO4 tomorrow!

I have never seen a “rain preceded by snow” event deliver in lowland south Manchester and I don’t expect tomorrow to be any different. Seen this countless times before.

Stayed pretty dry all day with a bit of a thaw but still 90% snow cover. Already dropped to -1C, cold night to follow. Chance of some snow tomorrow before the mild air really takes hold then back to normal for the new week.

AROME model is going for a rain shadow over Greater Manchester tomorrow restricting snow to the highest ground.

Some mist here too.. but it doesn't feel all that cold.

That could also be the final nail in the coffin for tomorrow if dewpoint stay above 0C all night.

TBH i'm not overly bothered FH -

I've no massive interest in snow rapidly turning to a slushy mess anyway ..

It s been fun but really, its been fun with no end product for our region.Lets hope for some upgrades and some cold into Feb- Jan looks a lost cause now..

Looks like SE flow so wouldn't surprise me if we stay relatively dry. Still, at least we will miss most of the rain

Yep the dreaded SE flow and then that mysterious hole opens up on the radar, like northwestsnow says hopefully Feb will deliver proper.

Loads of people rave about March 2013, but the SE flow made that a non-event for us.
