We had heavy snow earlier tonight but that went slushy and now there is ice every where. Dreading the moped journey home later.

Looking at the rain today radar there is a massive front heading quickly this way from SW over the Welsh mountains. That's got to be more snow with my name on it ?

Looks like its going to miss us to the south :(

Down to 2.5°C here now as the offshore wind kicks in. Already much lower than the Met thought it would go  of course. Still looking good for in a few hours.

Looks to be slipping to our south to me chris?

What time you reckon it will move into the region?

If it has overestimated surface temperatures which it has at least for me, then it has likely done the same with the dewpoint so let’s wait and see about today. Yes, looking interesting for a spell of snow perhaps followed by ice pellets for a time on Sunday.

Painful watching this precipitation edging across. Metoffice forecast mentions potential accumulations over Southern Pennines, but I wonder whether it will actually slip to the South?

Doesn't anyone find the thicknesses are predicted too high for tomorrow?

Man Airport TAF suggesting possible rain or snow between 09:00 and 14:00 today.

Liverpool Airport TAF is the same.

Just  an observation on today: 850s are actually lower than the 10th Dec when we  had slider-gate so if the surface was just a little colder there would be no marginality problems at all.

If the precipitation is heavy enough today then evaporative cooling will be effective as winds are light and 850s are cold.

Liverpool Airport TAF is the same.

Just about to say that, unchanged from last night.

Question for someone who knows more about the airport TAFs. I've never seen them include sleet. Does rain, snow actually mean sleet rather than rain or snow?

Yes. That’s what sleet is anyway, a mixture of both. :-)

there is a slight ambiguity I feel sometimes.

Well yes, rain and snow together would be sleet, but rain or snow is a different expression and is not sleet and can mean periods of rain and periods of snow, so I was just wondering which is the correct interpretation when stated in the TAFs.

I think it is quite ambiguous. I don’t know for certain.  I think it’s probably sleet though as SP says
