No disrespect but why is 2-4" of snow worthy of an Amber warning?

Sorry maybe I've got a skewed view but why is that such a biggy? Hells bells that was a shower in 1947 or 1963!!

Bunch of bloody wooses whoever decides this!

More vehicles on the road hence more collisions.

Wasn't the same in 47 & 63. More horse and carts and people walking or using public transport.

Well maybe it says as much about us as a society these days with our (in)ability to cope with a bit of adversity as it does about ....anything else?

That trough will be arriving in the region shortly, according to XCweather, the dew points at most stations are at freezing or just below so we may even see some snow at sea level and near the coasts if we are lucky but should certainly fall as snow further inland so eyes on the radar.

Today has been really dissapointing(in the respect of how so few showers there has been here although other parts of the region has definately saw more convective showers) and its a learning curve that a big strong polar westerly flow does not gurantee a full on sunshine and showers. In future, set ups which shows a slacker flow and a more WNW'ly flow will be more exciting I would of thought but we shall see what will happen.

Might also be down to the fact that winters are gradually getting milder and less snowy, so it take less snow to cause disruption. There hasn't been a winter like 1962/1963 since, most people alive today probably have no experience with snow or cold like that.

And perhaps most importantly, that isn't a Met Office amber warning, it's just something someone has done themselves. I wouldn't take much notice of it.

Aye Fair enough re provenance of Amber warning, but we do seem to struggle as a society with the slightest of difficulties...

And sadly, unless sea ice in the Arctic recovers and global warming lessens then we probably will never get a cold set up which will deliver uppers of -15 or below ever again really as the PV is far too weak and fragmented these days. Although that said, i think February in the 2011/12 season had a massively deep cold pool over the continent which nearly headed our way but sadly did'nt. Unfortunately, Western Russia these days during the winter months tend to be dominated by high pressure rather than a chunk of PV dropping there so whilst that remains to be the case, a beast from the east will not happen.
