The metoffice have a wind warning out for n Ireland and SW Scotland. Looking at the most recent output, they may need to shift it 200 miles south!

Yep once more I’m baffled a selection taken from GEFS 12z going by that the central swathe of the country appears more likely to be affected by potentially disruptive severe gales.

Obviously, the MetO have more models at their disposal, so I'd expect a couple of options.. 1: They might be awaiting more data, and add separate warnings. 2: They may have jumped the gun with the current ones. lol

Yellow warning for strong winds in the north

Between 02:00 Sun 31st and 15:00 Sun 31st

Some very strong winds are possible across Northern Ireland and then southern Scotland and the far north of England on New Years Eve. There is a chance of damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, with the potential for injuries and danger to life from flying debris. Large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal areas could also be a hazard. Longer journey times or cancellations are possible as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected with the chance that some roads and bridges could close. Powers cuts may occur and other services such as mobile phone coverage may be affected.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

An area of low pressure is expected to develop in the east Atlantic then on Saturday night then track northeastwards close to Northern Ireland and into Scotland on New Years Eve. This will bring some very strong winds to these areas with gusts of 55-65 mph expected and the potential for gusts of 70-80 mph in some places. The winds will ease from the west as the low continues to move northeast, winds easing down by late afternoon. There remains some uncertainty in the track of this low system and so the areas affected by the core of strongest winds. However, not all of the warning area is likely to be affected.

The only warning for the south is heavy rain in the southwest

Heavy rain is expected across much of southeast Wales, southwest England and parts of central and southern England from Saturday evening and overnight into Sunday morning. Bus and train services will probably be affected along with spray and flooding on some roads making journey times longer. Flooding of a few homes and businesses is also possible.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

An area of rain will run across southern parts of England and Wales on Saturday evening and overnight into Sunday. With the ground very wet in these areas this is likely to lead to rising water levels and some flooding in places. This is most likely on Sunday morning with some very heavy rain possible for a time. 15-25 mm of rain is likely with some spots seeing 30-40 mm - much of this falling in 3 hours or so on Sunday morning.

Aaah.  So THIS  is where i find out about the windy weather!!! Silly me!  Ive been looking in the mod thread; of course, talk of wind and rain showing in the models isn't  allowed on there. Apparently  in silly season you can only discuss snow.
