Model output discussion - heading into 2018

JUST BEFORE I LEAVE TO GO TO THE FAMILY, I'LL GIVE OUT A FEW CHRISTMAS PRESENTS TO SOME OF OUR FAITHFUL MEMBERS

For those up north the coldest on record:

For our friends in Scotland, the snowiest 47 cm  (and 43 cm at Buxton):                                                                

                                                                                                                                                                                  Dec 25th 2009: lying snow 43 cm

and more recently, for England, Malham Tarn (N. Yorks) again 43 cm:                                                                      

                                                                                                                                                                                 Dec 25th 2010: sunshine 7.5 hours

Not everyone likes cold and snow, so just for @knocker the sunniest on record, actually at Camborne:             !  

 

Ooops, sorry that was also very cold and snowy (the snowiest in Wales - 45 cm and Northern Ireland  -17 cm) !!!

 So for Knocker as well as Sidney, here's the warmest (Killerton, Devon):                                                                

 

Even though it's Christmas, this is a model discussion thread and to keep the moderators happy, let's have a look ahead with a few post Christmas surprises for some of you. From the 6z GEFS ensemble suite I have the following presents for Wednesday, December 27th (and don't forget to "discuss these models"):

Not huge difference between the models with Boxing Day night's low track in the grand scheme of things given we are still a good 60hrs away, but the differences of 50+miles makes a difference to the northern/southern limits of potential snowfall on the northern flank and back edge as it clears east.

00z ECMWF, UKMO and 06z ICON furthest south at 00z Weds, taking low centre through the E Channel:

00z/06z GFS and 06z ARPEGE further north at 00z Weds, 06z a little further north than 00z GFS

EPS mean and standard deviation shows the lower confidence around the track of the low too:

Be interesting to see where the models track the low on the 12z output, plenty of room for change in track with the low yet this far out. Like other have said, we may not no until later tomorrow or early Boxing Day on most likely track!

 

[BLAST FROM THE PAST]

Well for me things are ticking along nicely.  Xmas week looks more on cold side but active as per general ‘rhythm of winter’ which continue the yo yo theme.  Strong solar wind has hit us now on cue and for me is now causing neartime adjustments to the jetstream.  More adjustments on the models still to be had yet with increase of precip intensity. 

Beyond Xmas and Winter is still on cse to be half decent so don’t think of weeks of westerly dross. Around period of 7th to 15th Jan for next big cold strike....not from HLB but displaced PV scenario over us and to our E/NE.

Have a great Xmas.....and some folk will get plenty of snow over the next 4 days.

Happy Christmas David, your input is amazing and I'm sure all coldies agree!

Looking at the week ahead, the models certainly shows some wintry interest after christmas  day, especially during the midweek period when some areas could see snow, especially central parts..fingers crossed there is plenty more wintry weather to look forward to during Jan / Feb

Well it is looking colder for 3/4 days from Boxing day with a chance of some snowfall for some.

The wave depression forming out west during the holiday is the one to watch.

GFS 06z run

As already discussed even at this late stage the exact track not yet agreed but the latest charts from  NW NMM model shows the secondary low approaching from the west early on the 27th tracking across S.England and Wales-some images 

Higher elevations likely to see some cover but i would think lower down if any settles it's likely to be brief given that dew points and surface temperatures are modeled to be around or just above zero as the precipitation comes through-a very tricky one to forecast,as ever.

Just looking ahead signs indeed that we enter January in a westerly pattern and a +AO/NAO setup 

The Vortex showing a more reformed circular characteristic.The jet still easing south between the bouts of Azores ridging so temperatures probably varying from mild to rather cold.

Unfortunately week 2 is not the pattern Winter lovers would like and iet's hope that we a see a change as we go further into January.

Anyhow whatever your preferences i wish everyone a Very Happy Christmas.

A beauty of a post, @Bring Back1962-63 . Mods, please could you perhaps bookmark this as it'll help many people's understandings in my opinion. Which weather charts bring particular weather types to one area and not to others are a most important aspect if you ask me and this post should help that learning process.

Easterly from day 7 on perb 10 earliest I’ve seen, Merry Christmas to one and all. Most of our Scandinavia highs start courtesy of +ve heights to our SW not always a foe! Interesting where the spread is too.

Yes gfs 12z brings heavy snowfall for the same areas as the icon!!midlands and wales is sweet spot again!!!

GFS going with a northward progress just like the last slider only to catch up around 12hrs before the event. 

My money is on EC taking it through the midlands through northern Home Counties. 

SE Midlands sweet spot to me. Along the lines of @tight isobar excellent summary yesterday

Looks like the GFS 0z has had a bit too much of the 'Christmas spirit' already! Nevertheless it's very, very rare to see a high 1050mb moving into the UK from the SW

Fax charts are showing the incursive front on 26/12 - 27/12 as occluded. This compares to a warm front earlier in the similar setup earlier this month.

Would anyone care to comment on this. Latest 12z GFS snow risk and precipitation type charts continue to show this as much more significant for southern England than the last event.

Even GFS with one of the most northerly tracks brings some decent back edge snow for us down south. Areas south of the dreaded M4 there’s a greater chance this time around!
