1987 -23.3 Caldecott (Leics.) 13 January

Amazng how these minimums compare to the ones on recent years!

six of thes minimums are colder than every year in the last 30 years except that in 1995!

Thanks for these stats. Jan 2010 produced very low minima as well, I think -22 degrees. Not sure what the low was in Dec 2010. -14 degrees then the current low, still February to go and is more likely to produce a settled high pressure frost spell than January, and you can see very low minima well into March as well.

Resurrecting this thread, its been dead since 22 January! Alas might we see our coldest min Wednesday night into Thursday in England at least. -13 degrees to beat... I very much doubt it though due to cloud cover and wind strength, really could have done with a ridge then some very cold minima would have been produced.

However, for many the coldest mean value of the winter will occur on its last day, and also coldest maxima.

Keep resurrecting this thread - no response.. tonight could be the coldest of the season so far in England at least, we have -13 degrees to beat, we went close to -12 degrees last night.Given we have lower uppers tonight and some deep snow cover, could end up below this..

Could we get a lower minimum in spring than winter, if it's lower tomorrow night than tonight?

Wouldn't be the first time. March 2001 was sub -20C and colder than any Winter month in what was a cool Winter, at least in the North.

Official lowest min was -11.9 in South Farnborough I think.

Not sure about Scotland - would be good to know.

March 2001 was a very cold start thanks to a bitter northerly airstream delivering heavy snow to much of Scotland and NE Eng, and then we had a ridge, light winds and deep snow cover, produced those exceptionally low temps.

March has taken the coldest day of the year 14 times since 1900 and has been as late as 20th March.

Once Monday's band of rain fades, the next few days will be drier. However, it will feel cool, even cold, in the breeze or under gloomy skies, with an increasing risk of frost. Read the full update here

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming. Week Ahead: Cool but largely dry until later in the week, when low pressure returns

We keep a chilly northerly flow going through much of the coming week, especially noticeable in the east. Cloud and rain spreading south Monday, but after that, most places largely dry until later in the week, when it looks to turn more showery. Read the full update here
