About an hr's worth of snow here, nothing settled. So not proper snow. Bring back January 1987 is what I say...

According to BBC Weather the rest of today's  precip. should be snow. Nothing happening as yet. Okay so, whenever you're ready sky...

The actual radar part is accurate. So the intensity of the precip is. But it's the precip type part that isn't. The precip type tool simply matches up the radar (accurate) with the model data (not always accurate, and it's not so straightforward or foolproof to work out whether it's rain/sleet/snow).

Ah ok, I see! So the precip is actually in real time, but the type of precip is more of a guesstimate. Thanks for clearing things up, most appreciated! :friends:

Didn't expect the low to be moving se, thought it was supposed to move north east through the country. Don't know where I got that idea from.

Smaller flakes and turned quite heavy here now. Hoping i can squeeze a few more hours out of this to get some settling.

What part of Chingford? We are near the dogs stadium and it has just started to snow again but prior to the snow it was raining for a good 30mins!

Up in north Chingford

What's really interesting today is that the model data has done a great job for 99% of the time in terms of prec type, with the prec in the SE, it has it turning inrceasingly wintry from 1400, so the radar will start to change more at that point. One thing we've looked at, and may start doing for the radar is running the modelling for the prectype in 15 minute increments rather than hourly, then changes will come through earlier in situations such as this. :)

Great idea ?

Not wanting to diss the precip type at all by the way, was just explaining how it may not always be spot on :D
