Turned back to snow. Nice big flakes. Radar still showing it as rain though?

Snowing again here. It's a shame we don't get several inches. You can't really enjoy a light covering.

Bear in mind the radar is just a sort of best guess.

I'm guessing the worse part of the wind storm is about now by the sound of things, as the low moves just to my north.

The precip type radars are based on model data. Not actual observations. It's a "best guess".

Thought I'd pop a festive playlist on, put it on shuffle, "Let it snow" was the first song. Fantastic.

Went out in it with the kids and the snow had thawed, unless that was to do with temps rising?
Most of the snow from this morning has now turned into a 'slush'...

The local stations say 1° which should be just enough to hold up the snow with just a very slow thaw rate. It's pretty much held up consistently in Walthamstow. More slush could be just due to more cars driving around.
By the sounds of things the temperatures are going to drop again though.

The radar part is, the precip type is derived rather than observed.

Using the full doppler data you can actually determine it, but the Met Office choose for whatever reason not to sell that to the public.

Ah, my bad. I thought it was an actual real time radar? If thats not the case then how can we use it to track storms etc?

In other words, of minimal accuracy in marginal set-ups?

D.P. rising here accordiong to Meteociel as the colder airmass drifts south.  Only a light dusting here that's now melting rapidly; it was always going to be marginal for us, but I must say I'd love some milder zonality now for a while, as unpopular as that would make me here on Netweather!

Pity; I'd pay a small subscription to get Doppler if it was available.

Snowing again in Lee Green/Lewisham

Yes, terryall, snowing steadily, after that couple of hours, of a little rain/sleet.

Best wishes,

Tom.

The actual radar part is accurate. So the intensity of the precip is. But it's the precip type part that isn't. The precip type tool simply matches up the radar (accurate) with the model data (not always accurate, and it's not so straightforward or foolproof to work out whether it's rain/sleet/snow).

As would I. It's not even available commercially.
