With the update on here on Friday, I deliberately experimented with new graphics, moreso than in a "proper" blog.

are they any that people like or don't like. Please be honest.

Also great to see the snow photos, they really are gorgeous and i am jealous.

Hi Julian. IMHO I think the animated charts are a great feature and better than having to post lots of daily charts to paint the picture of the week ahead. However, I think a bit of experimentation is probably called for to get the right combination of chart intervals, frames per second and 'time of pause' at the end. Also, I would like to see each animation with a fuller description of what the time sequence is showing. So for example....

Synoptic Pattern (7 day sequence Monday 4th to Monday 11th December)

tempresult_ius9.gif

For the above animation I used 12 hour chart intervals, 2 frames per second, and pause of 3000 ms at the end.

Snowfall Accumulation (72 hour sequence Sunday 3rd to Wednesday 6th December)

tempresult_emx8.gif

In the sequence above I used 4 hour chart intervals, 2 frames per second, and pause of 3000 ms at the end. And interestingly, the sequence shows some melt at lower levels following the earlier snowfall accumulation in the sequence.

Hope that's of some benefit Julian. Whatever you choose, once again thanks for the time and effort you put into the weekly updates.

P.S. High winds and snow is the forecast for here in the Yukon tomorrow! :)

Lovely morning in Katchberg at 8.20am. Beautiful groomed runs. This is one of several blue runs from the Chapel down to the village.

Re the charts J10 I would suggest a slightly longer time for each chart?

Mmm let me guess.

Would it be an off piste type run running from the top to the bottom in a small Austrian resort.

Nah stupid me its the new purpose built resort just south of Calais,

Afternoon Mr C who is lucky enough to be under the best snow for years at this time.

Am i under the impression that you are going to get buried this weekend and into next week, from some of the models being posted and noting the rainfall looks very heavy over europe.

In between Scandi & Romania doesn't exactly narrow it down much. Poland or Germany?

Overview

There has been a very good start to the ski season with decent snowfalls over many parts of the Alps. The following resorts have over 1 meter of snow over their higher slopes in Austria (St Anton), Switzerland (Saas Fee), France (Val Thorens) and Italy (Cervinia).

Weekend

A North Westerly wind is established over the Alps for this weekend with some temperatures well below average over the Alps. Heavy snowfalls are expected over the Alps during the rest of today and into tomorrow.

Signs of things turning much milder for Sunday and Monday as winds swing round to more of a South Westerly direction, however further precipitation is expected for western parts of the Alps, with snow levels 1500m on Sunday rising to well over 2000m on Monday.

Next Week

For the middle of next week, low Pressure is set to edge South Eastwards over the Alps, with a big temperature contrast, and the snowline dropping readily as it passes through, with snow back to generally resort levels.

At this stage looking a little bit drier over the Alps, however further periods of precipitation are expected to push over the Alps later next week, snow is currently expected above about 1000-1200m on Thursday but dropping again as the fronts edge through.

Precipitation

Some heavy snowfalls are expected over the Alps for the next week, with over 1 metre of additional snowfall expected next week, with higher slopes more likely to see snowfalls around the start of next week, while at at other times snowfalls is more widespread across the Alps to lower levels.

Freezing Levels

Very cold to start the weekend, turning much milder by Monday with freezing levels over 2000m , but cooling down somewhat by Wednesday.

Summary

Another snowy week in prospect for the Alps, while it will turn much milder for Monday, things should revert to colder than average for the rest of the week.

lucky lot, thoughts if walking in the Peak look like being scuppered by the low system predicted for Sunday! Not sure I agree with the term 'slider' either. To me it seems to be following the upper air predicted pattern and it is hardly coming against a block and sliding under it. But then I'm old fashioned.

The slalom down the Bellevarde yesterday from Val d'Isere showed one hell of a snow storm. They did well to keep that race on!

Anyone off to Savoie or Isere over the break will not be short of fingernails this year for a change!

With less than two weeks to go until Christmas Holiday skiers/boarders arrive, it's great to be able to report some decent snow depths in the Alps. Here's some figures in cm's from a handful of resorts in the French Alps which suggest that widely there's half a metre on lower pistes and a metre plus on upper slopes. :)

Resort               Depth Lower  Depth Upper

Tignes               108                  165
Courchevel        75                    100
Meribel               50                   120
Avoriaz               80                   120
Flaine                 44                   120
Megeve              50                   100
Samoens            60                   120

And looking at the 2m temperature forecasts out to 21st December it suggests that despite an easing in the very cold weather recently experienced, the Alps will retain reasonably cold surface temps in the run up to the holidays. Fingers crossed!!

Plenty of snow in the village this morning and a welcome return of colder temperatures. Currently -5c in village and -7c on the berg. Good to see plenty of early visitors to the resort enjoying the snow conditions and cheap pre Christmas deals. Great if you can drive here for a short break. Quite a few Brits coming over for Christmas and New Year stay.

First skiers of the day. Looks a bit less testing than Glencoe!
