Only The Mirror and The Sun barely mentions Ophelia on the front pages for tommorow. The Express is the only one that mentions Ophelia most of front page.

Other papers not one word of Ophelia mentioned.

To be fair, the Express have been predicting weather Armageddon of one sort or another every week for years... they were bound to hit lucky eventually... but by then no one believed them.

has the storm turned west a little ...looking like it on sat 24

It certainly looks like it one here! Wow, I am thankful for that but still feel very sorry for anyone in Ireland who may be seriously impacted from this! It looks like the computer models may have got it correct after all! Just me that is mistrusting of modern technology. Blame it on pensioner bias! LOL.

This will probably be the only time an Express weather article doesn't exaggerate the situation.

Because the initial fax chart didn't take into consideration the NHC still class(ed) her as a hurricane.

Well that's not gonna confuse people who are constantly told that hurricanes don't exist in the northern hemisphere ;)

I'm sure it was forecast to do that, and then dive more eastwards before landfall.

Less concerned about absolute wind speeds, more about sustained speeds.

Also, how much rain is associated with Ophelia? We already have ground that's pretty well saturated and trees still heavily laden with leaves. I can see some uprooting and branches coming off. Could see a lot of disruption in the West and Central Belt of Scotland. Flooding a possibility as well.

Not into Express doomagedon territory but could be nasty all the same.

Even newspaper front pages are barely showing Ophelia on them.

Nathan Rao must be on holiday, bet he's in the Caribbean waiting for a hurricane. Muppet!

Eh? Are the US and the Caribbean no longer in the northern hemisphere?

didn't you know - Wales closes on a Sunday - I can see Derek in Barrybados now sipping his cocktails saying, "nothing to see here" lol - BBC Wales news just seemed to pass over it just now, newsreader seemingly seeing it as another "ordinary day" of weather - could be some red faces after this

I absolutely hate how Derek underplays all forms of bad weather...the famous one from him on Twitter re Nov 26 2010, slight sprinkling of snow on the Beacons when lower elevations in Carmarthenshire saw 2" and most upper elevations saw 4" followed by the coldest december in decades!!

I think Aberdaron/Valley in anglesey will see 100>mph tomorrow!

The terminology is fine, it's the misuse of it that's the problem.

People are going overboard in here in criticising the media. Let's wait and see how things go tomorrow before slating everyone.

To me and you certainly, but we need to get it right for the masses who aren't weather savvy.

Someone mentioned earlier that the still mushrooming cloud tops near the centre increased the chances of a sting jet. I can't rememeber who it was. Can anyone help here re sting jet possibilities?

With regards to a sting jet, normally they tend to form in the early stages of rapid cyclogenesis (RACY) of a mid-latitude depression, this may occur with extratropical Ophelia well before landfall over Ireland, as by the time it reaches Ireland it will already be weakening. However, downward momentum of stronger winds aloft in embedded convection, likely impressive dry air intrusion wrapping into the low also aiding in downward momentum of strong low level jet just over on the cold side of the cold front will certainly produce some sting jet-like powerful and damaging gusts.
