We should also add February 2013, with the record of cold in the Pollino, a mountain range in southern Italy and later the snowfall in the north in the final days of the month. But January 2013 had been mild.

Models confirm the cold snap on Saturday. It will particularly affect the Adriatic regions, which have had a very mild winter so far and will be similar to the cold spells of January 2016 and January 2019.

Tomorrow the third cold wave of this winter will begin in Italy, on the whole quite mild but with some cold periods, as has often happened in recent decades. The regions most involved will be the Adriatic and Apennine ones but locally between tomorrow and Sunday it will be possible some short snowy episode also on the Tyrrhenian regions.

The astronomical autumn (not the meteorological one) for me is the most emotionally important season, because we move away from the sultry and merciless heat of the summer and go towards the dynamism of the cold semester ...
Unfortunately autumn in peninsular Italy has taken on different characteristics at least since 1999, in practice the summer has lengthened, "eating" part of the autumn season.
Only sometimes did autumn in peninsular Italy have characteristics similar to the 1950s / 60s of the last century, for example in 2007 and 2010, to a lesser extent also in 2003,2005,2017; generally, in these cases also December showed interesting things for those who love the cold and snow.

The expected cold wave in Italy has begun, probably the strongest in winter 2020/21. At this moment there are snowfalls on the Adriatic coast, still sporadic but which will be more intense tomorrow. On the Tyrrhenian regions the cold is drier but the temperatures are still quite low; tomorrow some snowflakes will also be possible in Rome and Naples, mostly in Florence, perhaps a slight snow accumulation is possible in Bari. The cold wave will end on Tuesday 16 February 2021.

The cold wave that is drawing to a close was short but intense, especially in the Adriatic regions and in the upper Ionian Sea. But there have been sporadic and very light snowfalls even in some cities on the Tyrrhenian side, like mine :) In the coming days, however, a lasting anticyclonic dome of North African matrix will be established, with a substantially spring climate, especially in the western regions.

On Sunday 21 February a maximum temperature of 20 ° is expected in Rome, due to the North African anticyclonic dome

The spring heat will be the protagonist in the coming days in Italy, with heat peaks above 20 degrees in Rome but a lot of mildness also in the Po valley, with a climate worthy of April

The winter of 2020/21 was overall very mild in Italy, similar to the winter of 1996/97 but this time, unlike the previous winters, the greatest positive anomalies were found in the south and in the major islands, especially in Sardinia. This has rarely happened in recent years, while it happened in the distant winter of 1996/97.
January was a "normal" month compared to the averages, while December was moderately mild and very rainy.
I talked about February, it had a wave of fast frost from 13 to 15 but overall it is one of the mildest in the historical series, especially in the south and in Sardinia.

At the moment, March does not seem to take the heat path, temperatures are more or less normal for the period, especially on the western slopes but we must consider that in the last decade March always closed above the thirty-year average in Italy, except in 2013 and in 2018 and it was exceptionally hot in 2012 and 2017, so it is inevitable to expect warm phases in the coming weeks.

Here are the anomalies of Italian winters decade by decade, compared to the CLINO 81/10 average:
1951/60 -0.11
1961/70 -0.61 (!)
1971/80 +0.19
1981/90 -0.23
1991/00 +0.10
2001/10 +0.09
2011/20 +0.60

We note the mildness of the last decade and the slight countertrend of the winters from 2001 to 2010 compared to the previous decade.
The winters of the 1960s were remarkably cool.

We note the strong warming that has been going on for several decades (accentuated since 2003)

1971-1980: -1.37 ° C.
1981-1990: -0.57 ° C.
1991-2000: +0.06 ° C.

2011-2020: +0.95 ° C.

The next week will be quite cold in Italy, especially in the eastern regions, due to arctic impulses. This type of situation, i.e. an unstable and cool March after a mild and dry February, was typical of the 90s.

From tomorrow a cold wave begins in Italy, not exceptional for the month of March but long enough. It will be possible to see snow at mid-hill altitudes in many regions but not in low hills and on the coasts, as happened the last time in March 2005 and in various areas also in March 2004 and March 2013.

The cold is the protagonist these days in Italy, with snow at hilly altitudes. Temperatures will gradually rise from tomorrow and could rise above average in a week, especially in the north.

The cold phase is now running out and especially from Saturday 27 March temperatures will rise, especially in the north and in the Tyrrhenian regions. In the long term, a heat wave is possible throughout Italy.

Next week, temperatures will gradually increase in Italy, first in the north, then in the south, returning to values typical of late spring and will be a heat wave comparable to that of March 2001.

A very hot March end ... Today Florence reached 26 degrees, touching the record heat of March 2012. In the next few days, however, temperatures will drop in the north, while they will rise to the south, reaching 23/25° in Sardinia

Happy Easter! It is a rather cold Easter in various areas of Italy, in some cities it is the coldest since 2008. Last week it was very hot, Florence had reached 28 °, a monthly record for March.

This night was surprisingly cold in many parts of Italy. - 4 degrees in Grosseto, Tuscany, 0 degrees in Cagliari, Sardinia. Either way, it's record cold for April

This Sunday is still relatively cold in northern Italy, while in the south the temperatures are milder today and especially tomorrow. However, in all of Italy so far this April is not hot, so it is very different from all the ones we have had from 2006 to 2020.

For the moment the cold phase continues in Italy, in recent days mainly in the north, since yesterday also in the Adriatic regions and in the south. It seems, for the moment, an April of the 70s or even the period between 1991 and 1997.

With today a very cold phase ends compared to the period in Italy. From tomorrow the temperatures will rise and next week a first late spring heat wave is expected, with temperatures widely above 25 ° in the south up to 30 ° in Sicily, a situation that has often occurred in recent years at the end of April.

In Italy, significant warming is expected in the coming days, especially in the southern regions. However, the month of April 2021 was decidedly cool, it will probably be the coolest since 1997 or 2001, depending on the area.
