Even snow on the Alps could be possible below 1000m near the Swiss/Austrian border over the weekend. But across northern italy, night time temperatures should dip well into single figures under clear skies.

Since yesterday the thermal heat has started, although in the south it is still quite hot. Over the weekend, however, a thermal drop will be felt everywhere, with late autumn temperatures, very different from those we had in this very hot September.

Today more normal temperatures, currently 21.0 °C, partially cloudy, but it was very cloudy and humid in the morning.

Last days of September will be very fresh here  Autumn will be protagonist in this third decade of Sep. in the NW of Italy, with moderate rain at first and then an important fall in temperatures.

After the first two extremely hot decades, the third decade of this September 2020 is turning out to be cool and rainy in all Italian regions but especially in the center and north, with temperatures worthy of late autumn. However, this phase will end by tomorrow and from Thursday there will be an intense temperature rise, with temperatures again above 28 ° in some southern regions.

October started with a partially cloudy day, max of 21.6°. From tomorrow will start a cloudy and rainy period, since 10 days the Autumn is accelerating more and more. On the 27th of September in Carmagnola were recorded very low minimum temperatures (1.8° in the countryside, 3.0° in town), in the last 27 years in the country-side station it was recorded the second lowest-minimum temperature (only behind the 18th September 2001, with a min of 1.1°).

Despite a cold third decade, however, September was warmer than average, especially due to a very warm second decade.

Very hot beginning of October in the far south ... tonight there were a minimum of 30 ° in Palermo, Sicily. However, this is the warm prefrontal that precedes an Atlantic perturbation that will bring heavy rains in most of Italy.

In the next few days, a wave of Arctic cold will bring almost winter temperatures in northern Italy and late autumn weather in parts of southern Italy as well. It is the first cold occurrence in October from the third decade of October 2014.

The second decade of October is proving to be particularly cool, especially in the north, where it is the coolest since 2003 or 2009, depending on the area. Instead, the third decade of this month should be quite hot, especially in the western regions.

Since yesterday there has been a marked rise in temperature in the southern and central regions, which however will not be lasting. In general it is a fairly cool October, especially in the north, similar to October 2010.

From today begins a strongly anticyclonic phase on Italy (and on many areas of Europe). However, it is an autumn subtropical anticyclone, therefore the maximum temperatures will be above average but at night it will be cool or locally cold.

October 2020 has been a relatively fresh October in Italy. Here, in this area, this month of October has been about -0.5°/-1.0° below 1981-2010 average, the third coldest October of the last twenty years, only behind October 2003 and 2010.

However November started with fog that dissolved around 13.30, since then the sky became clearer and temperatures went higher, now 10.7°

The night of 4 November 2020 was particularly mild throughout Italy, with unusually high values for November in the north: 13 ° in Cremona center, even 15 ° in Rimini ...

November 2020 seems to want to continue very mild, but in the next few days there will be some timid fresh infiltration on the Adriatic regions

How are you doing with rainfall so far this autumn?

It is exceptionally dry in most parts of mainland Greece. Southern parts on the other hand have had flash floods from almost stationary low pressure.

Between Saturday and Sunday there will be a short but sudden cold action, more significant in the Adriatic regions, but later on, however, the climate will return mild in many regions due to the influx of ocean air.

With regard to rainfall, autumn 2020 is not proving to be very rainy in Italy too: September was dry almost everywhere, while October was rainy in the north but fairly dry in the south. November so far has been dry in almost all regions, especially the eastern ones.

On Friday 20 November and Saturday 21 November 2020 there were wind storms (Grecale) in many areas of central and southern Italy and a real flood in Crotone, in Ionian Calabria. It was a fast but very effective wave of bad weather.

In the North-West, unfortunately, November 2020 is going to be a very dry month. September here was mediocre but not bad, while October was rainier than average. However, November here will close with a total rainfall of only 4.4 mm, STRONGLY below average.

Temperatures wise: from 1981-2010 average, September and November both above average interspersed by a colder than average October.

Now, these last days of November are relatively cold compared to a very mild first half of the month. Today, the last day of Autumn, the min was not very low compared to the previous days (4.5 °C), but now the temperature is only 5.3 °C and it won't go over 7/8 degrees due to the low-cloud cover.

November 2020 closed in Italy with an anomaly that should be about 1 degree on the CLINO 81/10 average. It was a mild month, especially in the Tyrrhenian regions but without particular thermal excesses. Worth noting is the storm of the north-east wind of 20/21 November over the Tyrrhenian regions and the terrible storm over Catania (Sicily) in the night between 28 and 29 November.

This early December is characterized by snowfalls in northern Italy, locally intense. In recent decades, situations of this type in the first 10 days of December have become rare: something similar happened in December 2010 but limited to some areas, so also in December 2008, while in 2001 the big snowfall was on day 13.

Report in today's Times of severe flooding in Venice after a storm blew in from the Adriatic. Apparently down to the weather forecasters who wrongly predicted that the water level would reach only 1.25m, 5cm short of the trigger point for the raising of the new flood barriers, and the 78 barriers remained open even as the floodwater peaked at 1.37m and flooded the inner city. The barriers apparently need 48 hours to be fully activated and the problem arose because the wind unexpectedly gained strength. The residents of Venice are unsurprisingly bitter, having thought that the new barriers would end the flooding which has beset the city over the years.

This December in Italy is so far rather mild and there are no significant cold spells until Christmas. However, it is an extremely rainy month, at least in the Tyrrhenian regions and snowy in the Alps and at low hills in the north.
