I mention the terrible, exceptional and unpredictable rainy event for the city of Palermo a few days ago, in a place where it generally rains very little in summer and a lot in winter. Or often, it doesn't rain at this time of year. It's a totally subtropical city in terms of climate. Climate warming is making tropical crops thrive in Calabria and Sicily: https://www.ansa.it/canale_terraegusto/notizie/mondo_agricolo/2019/07/07/con-il-cambiamento-climatico-e-boom-di-tropicali-italiani-da-mango-a-banane_fbd86006-5ab0- 407c-9a60-4dfb6d18eb5f.html

Yes, Palermo received 80 to 120 mm of rain on the 15th of July. The average rainfall for July in Palermo is around 5 to 10 mm...

Also, in Palermo, since 1797, in July it NEVER happened to see so much rain in such a short amount of time.

However, coming back to home, today was a warm and sunny day, maxima just below the 30s (29.8 °C), minima of 15.1 °C.

Today a very hot and muggy day is expected in the central south of Italy, especially on the Tyrrhenian side. But next week the heat will intensify heavily also in northern Italy, with values diffusely above 34 degrees and high humidity rates.

This morning a minima of just 13.4 °C, the lowest of this month (on tie with the 4th of this month, when the min was exactly the same). A dry month though this one, 38.6 mm until now.

Max of 31.6 °C, min of 18.5 °C.

On the 31st of July and the 1st of August here we could reach 33 to 35 degrees.

The heat is a great protagonist in this third decade of July in Italy, after two relatively livable decades, especially for the canons of Italian Warming, which particularly affects the months from April to October in this country. Only between Saturday and Tuesday will there be an attenuation of the sultry heat but unfortunately it will not be lasting. The worst days will be tomorrow in the north and Friday in the center and south.

May 2020 in Italy results 1.1 degrees above the 1981-2010 average (more or less), so it is the tenth hottest month of May in the last 121 years in Italy (together with 2015, 2017 and 2007); here is the Top 10 hottest months of May from 1900, nationwide:

1) 2003 and 2009 (+2,0 °C on 1981-2010 average).

3) 1920 (+1,7 °C).

4) 1945 and 2000 (+1,6 °C).

6) 1986 (+1,4 °C).

7) 1999 e 2001 (+1,3 °C).

9) 2018 (+1,2 °C).

10) 2007, 2015, 2017 and 2020 (+1,1 °C).

Two facts:

- May 1908 was extremely hot for his historical period (mostly characterized by prolonged cold patterns), in fact it was about 1.0 above the 1981-2010 average, but some datasets consider it equal to 2007, 2015, 2017 and 2020 (+1.1 on the 30-year average).

- May 2019 was extremely cold; it was, with a -2.3 degrees anomaly from the 1981-2010, by far the coldest italian month of May in this century (beating widely May 2004, that was 1.7 below the same 30-year mean) and the coldest May since 1991 (May 1991 was terribly cold: -3.5 °C below 1981-2010 average, thus resulting in the second coldest month of May since 1900: it's beaten only by May 1902, that had a -3.9 °C anomaly from the 1981-2010 mean).

July 2020 should have closed with an anomaly of + 0.6 ° / + 0.7 ° on the 81/10 in Italy, even if we are waiting for the official figure. Until July 20, the month was relatively cool in the north and on average in the south but the third decade was extremely hot, especially in the central and southern regions and the heat was also heavily sultry. With climate changes and hotter summers, it is possible that foreign tourism in Italy is increasingly concentrated in the spring and autumn months, which are thermally pleasant and abandon the summer ones, which are too heavily hot and sultry.

Today minima of 13.3 °C, maxima of 30.3 °C. At least, in the next few days, the English will be good "heat-mates" for us  here Sunday 9th is forecasted a maxima around 33 °C.

P.S. Other fact: in Italy, after May 2019, only ONE month closed below the 1981-2010 average, this one is June 2020, closing at just -0.1 °C below this average.

After a few relatively cool days, at least in the Adriatic regions, a significant temperature increase is expected from Sunday, not only in the north (where it was already quite hot yesterday and today) but also in the center and south.

Yesterday August 12th a very heavy thunderstorm hit my town. From a maxima of 31.8 °C, the temperature dropped to around 19 °C after the thunderstorm. Rain was very heavy, wind was also strong and there were also some damages. The rainfall was 35.6 mm, making the 12th of August the rainiest day of 2020. (rainiest day since 24th November 2019)

Today maxima of 31.9 °C, pretty disgusting. But from Sunday 23th temperatures will go down here, close to late August-average.

Today minima of 17.1 °C, now 27.7 °C. Tomorrow and Thursday will be the last day of warm full-summer conditions here in the North-West, from Friday temperatures will drop for many parts of Central and Western Europe and temperatures will fall below average for the last days of August. Also September could start with cool temperatures, finally giving way to autumn.

Today Italy is divided in two: heavy rainfall in the north, especially in Val d'Aosta and Liguria, extreme heat in the Adriatic regions and in the south, where it will exceed 35 ° in Pescara, Foggia and in Sicily Catania, with winds from southwest.

While in the north there were flood situations, in the south but also in the center, 30 August 2020 was one of the hottest of the summer 2020: 38 ° in Bari, 37 ° in Pescara and Foggia, 35 ° in Naples, 36 ° in Cagliari, Sardinia. Rome had a daily average of 29.8 °, a day worthy of Tunisia!

In the next few days we will see more or less the same situation as in the third decade of August, with above average temperatures concentrated in the center and in the south, while northern Italy will experience a situation more suited to the month of September (which in any case is basically less hot than to the rest of Italy, as opposed to June and July).

So far September 2020 is proving incredibly hot in Italy, similar to the famous September of 2011, which was hot from start to finish. At the moment there are 30 degrees in Cremona, in Lombardy and 34 in Caserta, in Campania

Also here these are days of "Indian Summer", maxima around 30 °C here and minima of 15.6 °C. This pattern will remain for all the second decade, we can hope for proper early-Autumn weather only in the third decade... ☹️

Loads of storms currently ongoing in Italy.

This webcam is in Giglio, a little island just off the coast of W Italy. Textbook pulse storm right there.

Also in this September the protagonist is the heat, with values of midsummer in almost all regions. The nights of 12,13,14 September saw lows of 26 ° / 27 ° in some areas of the south, for example in Campania. Now, however, a disturbance is expected that will bring a first refresh, at least in the north and in the center.

Today more normal temperatures, currently 21.0 °C, partially cloudy, but it was very cloudy and humid in the morning.

Last days of September will be very fresh here  Autumn will be protagonist in this third decade of Sep. in the NW of Italy, with moderate rain at first and then an important fall in temperatures.
