Meanwhile to the north it certainly looks wintery

170 tourists were stranded at Stelvio this morning because of the heavy snow there. Meanwhile it's been reported that a number of yachts have actually sunk in Rapallo due to the stormy winds on the Italian Riviera including Berlusconi's yacht.

Some amazing footage there. I've visited Italy in October, albeit in the south, near Naples. The transition from Summer to Autumn can be extreme and violent!!

Another 10 extreme weather related deaths being reported around Italy on top of the 4 from the other day, terrible scenes on the coast around Portofino and Savona where the sea has caused a lot of damages, about 1,000 cars have caught fire in the port at Savona due to Sea water causing batteries to short circuits and explode, lots of Maserati's gone up in smoke.... crazy.

I hear that the weather was very pleasant in Italy for most of October, I saw some temps of over 30c on some days even in Milan in the north, certainly changed very quickly.

Still looking good in Stelvio after the recent falls of snow, still some considerable depth of snow to be shifted:

Them 170 tourists were stranded at Stelvio for a couple of days because of the heavy snowfall and fog, think they have been rescued now though.:cold-emoji:

Something I've noticed after some casual observation. The area around Sicily seems to be a hotspot for thunderstorms. Just wondering why this is? Anything to do with the heat from North Africa?

The road into the small hamlet where I have my house nr Parma is also eroding down the mountain, never happened before in living memory. Was sent these pictures today by my neighbour. IMG-20181105-WA0000.thumb.jpg.1b6f42c1e32d65b8e210aca2caade2b7.jpgIMG-20181105-WA0002.thumb.jpg.b00f66f747ef15979b91369688043d70.jpg

Italy has really paid the price of the high pressure block in Eastern Europe which has not allowed the lows to progressed further east. They just reached Italy and got stuck there. Of course Eastern Europe is not exactly lucky as they have drought. Not a drop of rain in the last month for my hometown in northern Greece and the same applies for much of the Balkans. The farmers must be in despair as there is no change on the horizon.

The only good news for Italy is that the weather has dried up considerably in most areas and looking at the models it looks like they can expect more settled weather for the remainder of the week.

Heavy snowfall about to hit central/south Italy, also in the far North and Austria. The Adriatic lake effect snow is a snow making machine, like our north sea, but they get this regularly every winter these days, there can be more snow in the ski resorts near Rome then on the alps.

Most recent updates from Central/Southern Italy are talking about close to 2 metres of snow in the usual locations like Capracotta but its been snowing right down to sea level on the coats in SE Italy. A very peeved off old man was interviewed saying that its not stopped snowing in 2 days! An elderly lady of 90 died in an ambulance in Sicily, yes Sicily stuck in snow drifts and blizzards!

Few pics there from the net.

OMG, its Incredible that they can get so much snow down there so quickly, just continuous snowfall, 24hrs, 48hrs, still snowing. And its 41/42c in Southern Italy in the Summer.

And we get zilch!!! In fact around this way and London we think we have struck gold on the rare occasion that we get a couple of inches of snow.:wallbash:

Saw a video early of the Trulli in Alberobello in the snow, looked magical, like the village of the gnomes and pixies.
