"Vertical evacuation". I think plain English would be more appropriate in these circumstances.

Head up now I would say the same for Naples too.

I'm also feeling pretty concerned for the WX Chasing guys at the moment. Saw in the feed comments that (apparently per Brett's feed), Brandon was stuck and Brett was trying to talk him out.

Good luck to them all.

I'm going to peel myself away from this for a while... it's been quite the day (and week, in fact fortnight!) for tracking tropical cyclones.

WX Chasing just commented to say they were now "safe and sound in my parking garage"

I was wondering how they were doing and tried to look but there was 7k+ comments, just before the feed went the road was essentially a river and he was using the sat nav, Jeff did say when he was there it was a potential death trap - lets hope they get out ok.

So, despite being over land north of Naples, Irma is still trying to fix her eye.

Shows the scale of what's occurring.

Parents holiday in Sarasota twice a year, there really keen to keep updated on events there.

Incredible videos on Facebook and twitter the past few days.....thoughts are with those affected.

Other than the horrendous loss of life, I would imagine Irma will be the costliest storm in history. I bet insurance premiums will be on the rise to help pay!

Not sure about that. Can see the potential, but it has fizzled rather. The majority of the generally quoted repair bills tends to occur in the States, and it's too early to say if this will have done that much damage. Certainly in terms of wind damage, it seems unlikely this will top any lists.

It's still had some pretty significant effects though, and over a historically wide portion of Florida... and it's still going, of course.

It's going to be the storm surge that's expensive to put right. The issue is the damage has occurred over some very valuable real estate.  Miami Beach, Naples, Marco Island, Captiva etc are very much part of the millionaires playground.
