seeing how this is a catergory 4 currently surely the wind should be way higher now than this, confusing?

It's has taken a while for power to be restored and proper wifi connectivity here in Antigua, but we're now back to normal.

Looking back at some posts on here and also the local 3 hourly Irma forecasts Antigua was so so lucky. We were following the latitude plots every bulletin and when it got to 17.2 with 5 hours before its nearest point we thought the storm was going to go north of Antigua. Antigua is 17.1 and at its closest point it was 17.4 so we had sustained winds of 85mph and gusts in excess of 100mph for about 2 hours between 1.00 - 3.00 am. The noise of the wind is amazing as it's hit the metal roofs.

Barbuda however is 35 miles away and took the eye of Irma at sustained winds of 185 mph ! And gusts to 200. In fact all of the wind instruments were destroyed. Barbuda was devastated and everyone has been evacuated to Antigua. 2000 people are now being housed in 2 large centres and sadly all they have is the clothes on their backs.

The rebuild of Barbuda will be possible but consider the logistics. 90% uninsured so who pays the costs of rebuild (government will need loans which it will struggle to repay), logistics of getting materials to the island. It's virtually impossible.

Then look at st Maarten, Anguilla & BVI. Talking to someone in the BVI they say yacht marina industry has been destroyed.

Hopefully that is it for 2017, but with 7/8 weeks to go I suspect there is more to come.

This is absolutely heartbreaking

Measurement should be taken 10m above ground so yes, I'm also fairly unimpressed with the wind returns thus far

Great find....First time for me in seeing this, gives a great idea what it is like to experience the type of wind speeds you get and ferocity in the eye of the wall....Then boom!.... like the flip of a switch....Nothing!

Reporters in Miami trying to make out the danger of their 70mph gusts ... Bit OTT? We regularly get 80mph or more in the Solent - it's a bit dangerous but not on a major life-threatening scale??

One could also try 100kt gusts on a Weather Ship whilst perched on a 70 foot wave.:shok:

The eye has past that station now, barometric pressure has been rising for about the last 3 hours so wind speed will have dropped relatively quite a bit by now.

If the forecast for Miami all along was gusts of  70mph then nobody would have been evacuated. There's a video of Hurricane Katrina making its first landfall near Miami in 2005 as a Cat 1 hurricane and cars were driving around like nothing was happening. Even some people were just walking around casually. It definitely isn't a big deal to them.

What a drama queen Pitroski is!! 125mph gusts he reckons as he is driving, pulls up and the palm tree is barely swaying with 35mph winds.

Seen worse on the South Coast lol
