Flooding pretty bad in Fort Pierce, north of Miami on East Coast - surprising numbers of vehicles trying to drive through it :fool:

On another note - heavy winds and downpours here in Belfast ... localised flooding ... weird to be seeing that outside my house and thinking nothing of it given what I'm watching unfold in Florida.

Latest sea level in Key West is 4.00ft.

The previous record was 3.13ft in 2005 and its still 4 hours until the next high tide.Looking at the tide gauge on the quay, I doubt it will last that long as its just a wooden hut.

https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/stationhome.html?id=8724580

Bit scary but still hardly a 6ft surge as NHC was warning or the 18ft surge that occurred across the quays in the 1930s.

Typically Key West experiences a tidal range between low and high tide of a mere 1ft, hence the surrounding roads and infrastructure are located just above it.

By comparison the tidal range in the UK - especially along the Severn estuary is up to 50ft.

IF these storms (i.e. Jose) ever ventured this way to the UK waters, then THAT would be a storm surge!

NHC warned of what happens if a surge coincides with high tide.

The sea level is also still climbing - currently 3.3 feet higher than normal.

Also, the NHC gives a range, not an absolute, for storm surge.

Eye is indeed tight. It's closed C16 as of 13:41z (or in UK time, an hour and 15 mins ago.)

Time for it to regain strength? Surely if it's slow moving and the eyewall has reformed tightly and it's into hot waters, then wouldn't it regain strength? I can't remember if it was Wilma or Charley that went from a Cat 2 to Cat 4 in the area that Irma is currently positioned. Anyone correct me on that?

2004 Charley, hit Florida SW coast as a Cat 4 after crossing Cuba slightly further west than Irma has turned. Charley pushed by unseasonal weather systems to the west into Florida taking just 5 hours before landfall to increase from a Cat 2 to Cat 4 in the very same waters Irma currently is.
