So the outer eyewall didn't entirely collapse after all... I'm amazed and yet not as surprised as I'd be with nearly all other storms.

Makes me wonder if the battle for supremecy will again be seen, and whether the peak winds will again manage cat 5 status more often than not regardless.

The frequent EWRC-like cyclesare  one of the main reasons Irma has become so huge. That and the particularly abundant atmospheric  moisture across many days of its lifetime.

I ain't so sure this one is not going to just keep on going into the Gulf. Historically hurricanes running the strait between FL and Cuba do not turn North until well into the Gulf and double back to FL Panhandle/Al/MS or beyond.

It's pushing and pushing further and further west all the time.

At 640 PM EDT, a confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado was
located over Lazy Lake, or near Fort Lauderdale, moving west at 35
mph.

It's currently roughly where the turn is forecasted/expected. Time will tell... and soon...

Out of curiosity - this is an unusual recon pattern. Are the Hurricane Hunters not allowed over Cuba?

It just seems to keep on pushing west going by this loop

Yes, I feel like I've been waiting all day for the "turn"!!

GFS 18Z takes it down to 905mb before landfall, so probably cat 5 if it's right. But a few dozen miles west now and the danger skirts hundreds of miles further up the Florida coast.

Miami already clear of anything extreme.

Less talked about is the potential for ground-flooding due to the rainfall forecast, FL has a aquifer-system beneath the state not only potentially raising the ground-water upwards but also stopping any rain-water from easily draining away due to the combination of the both.

With that in mind, is there any potential for a 'brown-ocean' effect to happen over FL due to the everglades and swamplands.

Given how prone to sinkholes Florida is at the best of times, it's going to be interesting to see if alot of new ones open up thanks to Irma's storm surge and rainfall. Having one of those open up under your house whilst you trying to ride out this hurricane doesn't bear thinking about.

If it does continue into the gulf, I'm sure weather forecasters will take a big hit in the public's eye. It will be seen as a giant c0ck-up.

I'm concluding that Florida is like australia, except the land itself wants to kill you too.

Hey all. The GR3 radar I've got running shows the eye tracking exactly west over the last hour or so.. strangely there's 2 GPS markers in the eye now for storm chasers ... not quite sure why that is!

Just in case anyone wants to use the live webcams to observe current conditions, here's a list of some posted earlier and perhaps new ones:
