So the outer eyewall didn't entirely collapse after all... I'm amazed and yet not as surprised as I'd be with nearly all other storms.

Makes me wonder if the battle for supremecy will again be seen, and whether the peak winds will again manage cat 5 status more often than not regardless.

The frequent EWRC-like cyclesare  one of the main reasons Irma has become so huge. That and the particularly abundant atmospheric  moisture across many days of its lifetime.

I ain't so sure this one is not going to just keep on going into the Gulf. Historically hurricanes running the strait between FL and Cuba do not turn North until well into the Gulf and double back to FL Panhandle/Al/MS or beyond.

It's pushing and pushing further and further west all the time.

located over Lazy Lake, or near Fort Lauderdale, moving west at 35

Yes, I feel like I've been waiting all day for the "turn"!!

GFS 18Z takes it down to 905mb before landfall, so probably cat 5 if it's right. But a few dozen miles west now and the danger skirts hundreds of miles further up the Florida coast.

Miami already clear of anything extreme.

If it does continue into the gulf, I'm sure weather forecasters will take a big hit in the public's eye. It will be seen as a giant c0ck-up.

Hey all. The GR3 radar I've got running shows the eye tracking exactly west over the last hour or so.. strangely there's 2 GPS markers in the eye now for storm chasers ... not quite sure why that is!
