Look to the far right of the Mallory Square webcam on full size, getting a lot rougher now.

Although I just caught the graphic giving its position and wind speeds of 128mph and a 951mb pressure.

Well I'm gonna just come out and say it!

I believe that Irma has both the time and environment to see her bomb her way back up to Cat 5 over the coming 18 hrs........ there! I said it!

I have exactly the same feeling.  All predictions have consistently underestimated Irma's strengthening (as they have with Jose) and looking at the SST's, I think Cat 5 is a significant possibility.

So... facebook livestreams from Key West are a thing at the moment.

Lots of them...

You just know there's going to be any number of daredevils out there tonight. I fear tomorrow we will be discussing how many of them are in the sea.

Whilst on holiday previously in Florida, Bay News 9 boasted that they have the most advanced broadcast weather radar in the world. Should make for good viewing as Irma approaches.

Just seen the BBC news, headline news. It is frightening, and I just can't get my head around that some want to stay put and are. Not that they can't but want to. And then you see clips of people preparing boarding their buildings... with plywood ?... better than nothing I suppose but..

It amazes me that people don't move  their trophy boats that cost 250 k upwards when they've had good warning of this storm .

I know what you mean. But then maybe more money than sense? Plus the added bonus of insurance..

We had a boat .. a dayboat which but survived in tact the 87 storm.. dragged its concrete mooring half a mile mind but survived.. others didn't and landed up on the coast road. Not really comparable at all but there maybe some saving grace  in that the boats have a small chance of being better off in the water than on the boat yard..

Oh right. Didn't know that. This maybe the last party though they may want to do.. think a few are very sadly in for a shock.

Wooden buildings can be more resilient than typical UK construction as everything is more seriously connected together and braced in a good design.
The  major risk is windows breaking from flying debris - this allows pressure to build inside exploding the roof off.
If the exterior shell remains intact the chances of minimal damage are improved.

Eric Webb was arguing on twitter that the size of the storm made a cat 5 restrengthening unlikely in his opinion

he also commented that in his experience, storms that go cat 5 and then make landfall which weakens them will not regain cat 5 again

20:06z: 935mb. Eyewalls concentric at 15 and 30 miles.

That's 4 milibars in 90 minutes, while in the middle of an erc.

Once that erc completes it goner dive bomb.

Whether it does or not is here neither nor there imo, Cat 4 at landfall would still be a disaster.
