Can someone explain why the sea has disappeared? Apparently this was taken on Sam Smith Long Island, Bahamas.

Storm surge under Irma causes a bulge in sea levels owing to low barometric pressure under the storm system, so sucks in water from outside ,similar  thing happens with tsunamis .

Well, there's two possibilities for that.

Either the shallow shelf has been cleared of water by the force of the hurricane, and what was once water there is now storm surge elsewhere...

... or we won't be hearing from her again because she failed to recognise the first sign of an incoming tsunami.

Potentially, elements of both.

Luckily the sea is rolling back in, albeit very slowly. She'll live!

She knows that the worst of the storm surge follows ~behind~ the storm, right?

Fingers crossed she's had enough info apart from "sending prayers" to realise that it's time to go back.

either the wind direction pushing water out or meteotsunami from intense air pressure, most likeley to do with storm surge and winds, interesting video

Was that before or after surge?

What i'm thinking is tge water was else where because of the wind probably pushing away. Surges are big movemenrs of water, it can't really rise somewhere without leaving somewhere else.

Live webcam from Key West, Should make for interesting viewing later.

Beginning to see some white caps on the waves here. The occasional person wandering along the pier with no idea that they're probably about to die (unless they're getting far far away from the Keys soon. They should probably be aware of the few "shelters of last resort" that the state has just opened for them on the Keys.

This evening's ecm has gusts in the 100-120kt range as Irma runs up the east coast Monday 00-06

I wonder which way it will go east or west. Still not nailed down.

Well, question was asked where the water went from that beach.

This is a weather station in the Keys showing observed water levels against predicted. Currently running 1' above predicted so I guess some is there instead of on that beach!

If that's now surely once the real rough stuff comes along those people have no where to go. Why did people on the islands stay.

Yes, the time capture suggests 630pm UK time so the storm hasn't really got going yet and it's already washing up and over the sea wall.

The link below provides an indication of Key West elevation. It's basically b****r all.

Pressure of 939 found at 18:30z.

(As a point of interest, that's the first time, that I've noticed, that the sonde measurement has been lowed than the estimated surface preassure in the HDObs.. and by a few milibars at that.)

closed concentric eyewalls at 15 and 30 miles wide.

Oh you confused me when you said east coast, don't know why though as the whole of florida will have high gusts, think i thought you meant the eye.
