And of course, Cat 4 hurricanes are extremely destructive. Hurricane Wilma in 2005 was a Cat 3 at landfall in Florida and that was certainly very powerful..

I was in Orlando in 2004 during Hurricane Jeanne. The place was under curfew and the power was off for 15 Hours. Most of damaged was trees and signs extra. It was quite an experience at the time it's like you can see feel the wind. Sounds crazy but it's not like your normal UK windstorm.

This was a weak storm thankfully in the end I wouldn't want to imagine what a high cat 4 storm feels like and the destruction it will bring.

Slight westward shift again from the GFS. Still shows near continuous strengthening before landfall though.

Do they honestly think the boats will be safer there? ....Why would anyone want to wait out Irma in Largo?... Surely that is madness?

I think he spoke a bit too soon, the inner eye had partially reformed so erc still ongoing.

Weve seen this supported by vortex drop where it's gone from c20 to c40-20 to c40 and the back to c40-20.

Latest slider shows it quite messy fragments all over the place.

I spoke to my uncle in Florida yesterday. He's really worried. He lives near Naples (east coast) and can't get away now. The highways are clogged and there's no fuel in the gas stations and water is sold out in the supermarkets It's not just the wind that's so worrying. The storm surge will be like the sea coming into the towns. I have a very bad feeling about this storm, I really fear for a great loss of life and catastrophic destruction

Just looking at the recon they are currently doing. The lower pressures have expanded dramatically during the erc so far.

Also the new larger outer wall in the ne quad has some very strong surface winds 137kts.

In the sw it's 132kt in the outer.

The inner is still at 50-70kts.

If it can clear out that eye a push to 160kt+ looks certain.

Howeve in case you missed it Irma is now a cat 5 again according to recon expect nhc to update accordingly.

So on the latest recon it states:

Highest Flt. Lvl. Wind (30s Avg.) 144 kts (165.7 mph) (USAF)

What exactly do this mean, is it the actual eye wall wind speed?

Just looking at GFS and they show Irma ploughing northwards into the high pressure to the north. I wouldn't be surprised if actually tracked more westward as that would seem the line of least resistance. Then what do I know.

It's the wind speed at the height of the aircraft. This is different to the Surface speeds.

What's the track according to the European model?

Its a HOLY **** track. Its going Gulf according to it.

That is going to send people in the US into a mad panic, god knows what speeds it would get up to if it went in there.

Specifically it hits Cuba and its forced significantly further West. Key will be where it ends up but odds are its going to put it to run along the west coast of Florida. This is really all up in the air even at 12h mark i.e. in 6 hours time.

ECM at 72 hours still has going over Central Florida, but making landfall at about Tampa, very different from GFS and UKMO, all due to that track over Cuba in the near term.

Waters of 30C+ west of Bahamas may strengthen Irma again after its slight weakening during eye wall replacement - which has now completed.
