Just two days left of summer, yes September often brings 'summery' conditions but it firmly falls into the autumn camp in my book... Please use this thread to post your statistics, overviews, reflections, thoughts and musings on the summer of 2017.

Here in the Lake District, it got off to a very promising start after a very good May, June brought some decent lengthy warm sunny dry conditions, and by the end of the month we had a potential very good summer on the cards, unfortunately once we got into the second week of July it all collapsed into a cloudy wet cool fest and never recovered. Once again August has been very poor, very little warmth, lack of sunshine and too much damp drizzly weather.

Overall a bit better than 2015, not as good as 2016, far behind 2013, 2014 but far from a washout compared to 2007, 2008 and 2012. Probably rank it alongside the likes of 2009 and 2010, half decent at times but generally not great. Another summer to forget..

June probably my favourite here with 3 fabulous days in a row. August has nearly reached average sunshine but nothing special like the previous 2 months. Similar temps throughout so from this perspective it's been a very comfortable summer. This probably beats 2015 overall for this reason although June 2015 was good.

From a gardener's perspective - here in the SE it has been a good year for sunshine, with many hot sunny days, but we have also had a good few below average overnight temperatures throughout the summer. Tomatoes were late to start ripening, even in the greenhouse.

I've been having to water the allotment garden for a lot of the growing year, as apart from a few short sharp wet periods, it has been a very dry year. I kept expecting to hear the words 'hosepipe ban'!

Recently we've had cool misty mornings which don't usually appear until much later, and the starlings have started congregating already, much earlier than usual. So it seems that Autumn really is well on its way.

Summer started well here. June was a good month with some very warm or hot days and not much rain, apart from a couple of shocking days but which gave a good soaking. Sunshine levels were even a little above average. July started similarly and mid month there were some proper 80's style spectacular overnight thunderstorms. Just like back then, though, thunderstorms allowed the Atlantic entry and then to dominate our weather for nearly the rest of summer. Horrible, chilly, gloomy, wet and often windy conditions completely ruined 'high summer'. Much better conditions arrived very late in August, especially over the Bank Holiday weekend with upper 20's C recorded. That didn't last and the gloom and chill returned today. My score for Summer 2017 is 6/10.

It seems as though those in the north west have had it poor and typically those in the south east have had it good [from a northerners point of view].Here in the pennines we seem to have had it in the middle this year overall not wet yet not dry either .June not too good to start but a warm middle and a couple of hot days.July and August nondescript ,ok but no groups of very warm days but not bad for sunshine and plenty of days with showers.Overall ok compared to recent summers but would be poor had it existed in the 80s or 90s.Average temperatures have been ok but shockingly short of anything hot with only 3 days above 25 deg in the whole summer and the max for August 20 deg sums it up at least there has been lots of sunshine about and not like some summers when we have gone a whole month without seeing it,that is the only fact that has saved 2017 from being poor.6/10 for my rating here.Yet another 3 months that we cannot class as great to add to the others.Still only 2 great summer months in the last 33

I do agree for the South it has been a reasonable Summer overall.

Sunny and Bright Weather - Overall, I would say this Summer has been good for delivering this. No endless days of overcast conditions or frontal rain (a fair number of times, when it did rain, was mostly overnight) with sunshine and showers being a feature at times, moreso during August. June tending to see the best of the driest, brightest conditions. But even August wasn't actually too bad for brighter spells at times. Rating 7/10

Thunderstorms - Generally a disappointing Summer for thundery weather here. There was an unstable West-North-Westerly which brought 2 little thunderstorms during the day on August 5th, but other than that (unless I missed any while on holiday up North in late August), storms were lacking. Rating 3.5/10

Warmth - Some good warm, and sometimes very warm or hot conditions in June, with some fairly decent warm periods in July. August was a bit more cooler, but albiet the odd day or two, no days that were unbearingly cool. Pretty average overall. Rating 7/10

On the whole, I give this Summer a score of 17.5/30. Would have been a brilliant Summer had there been a little bit more in the way of thunderstorms. Nonetheless, it was pretty good.

Very poor summer imby, lots of rain, lots of cloud, lots of wind coming off the sea from a SW direction so lots of suppressed temperatures, no thunderstorms (have heard about 3 rumbles all summer), not many days over 20c, extremely disappointed considering all the long range forecasts going for a BBQ summer. Winter better make up for it!

It started off quite well, with a warm to hot spell at the end of May. Then a brief cooler period early June, but the temps and sunshine improved, and we had some very warm and even hot spells in London.

The only thing I didn't enjoy was the hot humid nights between mid June and mid July, but sunshine was plentiful.

Summer however seemed to deteriorate after the thunderstorms in mid July, and didn't really recover until the end of August.

It was average, but probably the best summer overall since 2014, although still poor.

one of the hottest summers on record here...May, June, July, August and now September have all had days that have exceeded 30c...the three summers months have all been close to +3c above normal...the jet stream has been stuck in the same pattern since May..where it loops north near the pacific coast  and dives way south through the Midwest into Florida...out east its been a cool wet summer...hot and dry here

Review of Summer 2017 from a London perspective:

It was a summer of two halves. First half excellent, second half mediocre.

This max. temperature graph from Heathrow demonstrates it perfectly:

image.thumb.png.e3f79863e6752955087ffd9baf72c51b.png

Between 1st June and mid July there were several warm/hot spells with the temperature getting above 29/30c on 7 days. The gap in the graph above is on 21st June when the temperature hit 34c.

There were plenty of sunny days and little rain.

From mid-July onwards the temperature didn't exceed 25c until the end of August. The weather became a lot more unsettled with spells of wind and rain.

So overall, the summer was shaping up to be a potential classic but took a turn for the worse after 19th July. First half very good, second half quite poor.
