Absolutely love this thread. Certainly my favorite of the year. And for posterity, here is what we should be aiming for....

Well, it's that time of the year again, where we can all start turning our backs from summer, and start looking north and east towards the encroaching snows of Siberia.   Lets hope that this

Regarding the SAI remember that it's actually the gain south of 60N that is important.

2012 for example was stellar on the index because although western Russia had little snow, it went straight south from Siberia to China.

So I've created a GIF of the last 7 days. I'll do one next week for 14 days as it should look good! Beats having 14 tabs open.

Well cheers, that’s annoying. I’ll not bother next week then

Just have to get into practice with your lamppost watching skills that hopefully will be needed for real later in the winter.

Appears to be some dumpings have landed over Siberia, with what looks like sea ice meeting land across the Laptev Sea. Iceland looks to have a bit more of a covering also in the last few days and if you squint I'm sure even Norway is showing a couple more pixels.

DW...

Yep looking like the ice is set for rapid expansion now as the ice is seen to be  forming along the whole of the Siberian coastline.

High resolution confirms your suspicions of the first signs of an ice bridge in the Laptev. It also shows snowfall over most of Western Norway (at least over the mountains).

High resolution is looking quite positive now.

If the ECM synoptics of today bear out, expect a significant surge westwards of snow cover into western russia courtesy of low pressure and heights to the north, come 10 days time..

Or is it ECMWF over amplifying things as usual, someone please nuke that Euro high, I have seen it ruin our summers and winters for so many times now, it is up there with stalling atlantic lows to the west of Ireland, my father use to say, that is ony rains where stupid live, because smart ancestors of ours would have relocated long time ago, maybe he is right as this permanent autumn is getting to me now, we didnt have a proper season here in Ireland since July 2014 or December 2010!
