Nice to see all of Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and all Northern Tibet white! It means north and central Eurasia getting very cold, 500 mb thickness heights falling north of the Himalayas - leading to strong Westerlies over the Himalayas and Pamirs so that these major mountain chains become a major sink for Westerly Atmospheric Angular Momentum. 

Scope this is for weaker Westerlies in higher latitudes and high-latitude blocking later in the Winter.

I guess you already know, but Jason Furtado was a co-author on Cohen's original paper. I saw a less-than-friendly exchange on twitter between the two of them last year which suggested that they are no longer in agreement.

Here is the latest snow and ice chart. The snow and ice are making very slow progress and any increases made is done at a very slow pace. I hope this will change soon and that there will be more improvements in the snow and ice.

Further news on the cold to our East. Siberia described as worse than "brutal" cold.....

Yes, snow cover not looking good for Western Europe, although in compensation there's snow advance in Asia and North America over the next 8 days. A look at the latest GFS 7-day forecast 2M temperature anomaly for the Northern Hemisphere and Europe shows the warm up for our neck of the woods, but look at the incredible pool of cold air building in Eastern Europe:

Could see large areas of the Baltic frozen. It has frozen over completely 20 times since reliable records began in 1720, most recently in the infamous 1987 cold spell. More recently, floating ice was seen near Świnoujście in 2010, this a Polish seaside town just by the German border in the far south west of the Baltic, so the 'warmest' and last to freeze.

It will be, I'm fascinated with oceanography myself. The Baltic has a very low salinity so freezes more easily too.

Nearly froze over completely in February 2011. It's a good month when you can walk between Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn entirely over ice.

1981 is apparently what an average winter looks like for Baltic sea ice.
