Picture sent from my daughter this morning walking to work in Stockholm City Centre. First real snow of the season for them and looks like it will last for some time.

Your family seems drawn to cold and snowy locations ;-)

Yes they are snow nuts just like their mum and dad ! I know my daughter will be just staring outside her office window all day and excited to go to the Cities Ski-ing Snow Park later today.

there should be reasonable shift westwards into Eastern Europe from yesterdays and today snowfall, I can certainly confirm that about 30% of Slovakia is now covered with snow, I was lucky enough to be over there to get my 2nd winter fix already this year, heh. Picture taken from village of Sumiac in Low Tatras national park, kids and dog enjoyed it as well, I hope UK and IE will share some of that joy too this winter as we do not deserve this 13 degrees muck we have today for the rest of the winter.

Interesting comparison between today and the same day last year.  Snow is a little lower this year but sea ice appears to be significantly ahead of 2016.  Interesting to see if this continues over the next few weeks.

Here is the latest snow and ice chart and it looks like nearly all of Scandinavia is covered in snow.

Nice! Scotland has loads of pixels and it's still November

Edit, the pasted graph says Wednesday but it's definitely Thursday

Can't help but feel if the ice situation was better up there, then this current cold spell would be a lot more potent.

Hoping these gifs have worked, left shows a comparison of 2010 to 2017, right is 2017 to 2016

EDIT - You need to click on them to see the animation.

2010 to today the ice is clearly different, we are further west today than in 2010, the snow coverage is also very different, we had more snow in southern Europe at this stage, however, when compared to the 2016 and today image I think the ice difference is day and night, while the snow was teasing us last year the ice just wasn't there.

I'm firmly a keen amateur at all this lark and I stand in awe of those who have devoted immense amounts of their free time to studying the weather, but I have seen over the past 8 or so years there is a tighter correlation between ice and eventual snowfall in the UK than snow. In fact, widespread snow early almost seems to an indicator of a lower chance in these parts of getting a dusting. As I understand the more widespread the ice the better chance of a prolonged cold spell with a good pool to draw the air in from.

It's all to play for this year!

Expect the snow to push well into Europe later this week! Heavy snow forecast for parts of Poland on Thursday with more to follow and temperatures will remain low and preserve the cover :D

Which is, I think, just what we need if we're going to gain maximum benefit from a beasterly later in the season...:santa-emoji:

Finding it really interesting and good fun comparing the snow and ice from 2010. Check out yesterday - we had a good snow covering! Interesting to also compare 2009 to see how different the sea ice had extended and how snowfall looks to be far further west, than south.

Extreme cold -44c yesterday morning to end the Autumn season in Yakutse, 450km south of the Arctic Circle. Another location in the region recorded -60c in November ! Now that's cold .
