My friends live in Houston and I'm visiting them in 3 weeks time. They have been texting me with updates on the situation. Apparently, 12 tornadoes were reported in the Houston area yesterday. It really is a dangerous situation!

god forbid it but do you guys think this could end up as bad as katrina?

Cost wise yes, casualty wise I shouldn't think so , they've had far more time to prepare.

No respite coming for Houston another stream of intense rainfall on the way. It’ll get worse perhaps much worse before it gets better 10-20” forecast in the next 24 hours on top. Scary unprecedented flooding.

link to the 2 ft of rain they have had in Houston so far backed up by the accumulated radar.

Deaths are starting to come in, but it's important to stress that the deathtoll will rise for the next 5 days at least.

The main problem now is that the storm and worst precipitation areas are moving back down the rivers they have already over topped towards Houston again.

I see it getting far worse before it gets slowly better.

A horrific storm and what a shame that something so magnificent to look at from space has behaved in such a catastrophic fashion.

rb-animated.gif

Currently I am watching with a resigned sigh as the dry slot that tried to take the storm down becomes increasingly moist as a result of the sun getting to work on the vast areas of anomalous surface water across the region.

As the centre drifts over the bay, we have to hope that it does not gain enough independence from the nearby boundary line to become able to establish its own more vigorous circulation within the increasingly moist central airmass.

Meanwhile, (briefly OT here), Potential Tropical Cyclone Ten is streaming a lot of upper-level moisture out across the N. Atlantic. Good job the polar jet looks to steer most of that north of the UK during the coming week.

Try @jeff_Piotrowski  on Periscope/Twitter.  It's not continuous but he's been doing some great streams all through the event.

Harvey is more or less back over water. The low level center is broad but looks closed so lets see if it generate any convection.

Just goes to show how much rain can fall if one of the major hurricanes stall, always a threat in that NW quarter of the Gulf.

Interesting article here which tries to give some idea of the amount that's fallen.
