To be best of the 3 summer months. 1 outstanding spell of warm and very sunny conditions lasting 5 days + as a ridge pushes north of Ne over the country which will add to a warm and sunny month as a whole. Fears of drought and moorland fires will be at the greatest during this spell in particular. A dry month, very pleasant indeed.

July

A much more typical summer month. By this time the ridges coming from the SW will begin to show a pattern of developing west of Britain as we head through the first half of the month. Whilst there will be pleasant days, when high pressure is closer, there will be much more in the way of cloudier days too. Rainfall will still be a little down by average but closer by the second half of this month. Average temperature, average sunshine.

August

Slightly below par. Nothing particularly untoward but a earlier than usual feeling of Autumn in the air. By this time ridges extending further out west as a pattern making it feel cool at times. Rainfall will become average as troughs drop over the ridge affecting the Uk at times interspersed with better days. Average temperature to feel cooler at times because of windchill and cooler periods. Average sunshine.

Summary

A reasonable summer taken as a whole, better at first with 1 outstanding spell in June. Turning cooler and more unsettled second half but nothing out of the ordinary.

Never saw a wet summer coming!

been a decent summer here if you like Hot weather...have recorded temperatures above 30c 14 times..average for a normal year is just 2

This week is turning out to be warmer than expected and with the possibility of warmer weather for the 2nd half of the month, August is perhaps not looking like such a cool month after all.

Looks like summer may finish on a settled note going by this mornings charts.

Personally I'm hoping that the high remains slightly too our west keeping us on the "cooler" side of the high with temps around average rather than any silly plumes/warmth.

It is looking more settled, thankfully. I'm hoping for silly plumes and heat, love it and might get some interesting weather that way too.

There's been so many people on here reveling in the shocking weather of the last 2 months, so I'm hoping for a wet and mild Winter because I'm spiteful like that.

A very reasonable average summer here just north of Yorkshire. 

June: Slightly below average sunshine, A min at 8am of 14c and a max of 18c at 4pm. 3 exceptional days. Above rainfall.

July: Average Sunshine. A min at 8am of 14c and a max of 18c at 4pm. Once again 3 exceptional days. Average rainfall. 1 exceptional thunderstorm.

August so far: Average sunshine. A min slightly lower than the previous months with a max similar. So a range of 13c to 18c during 8am into the evening. Average rainfall. No exceptional days so far.

This is all very normal for here apart from the thunderstorm which was rare event.

I should add the min temperature in June was about 2c above average so this was notable with the max 1c above. The max in July was 1c below average.

One of the wettest coolest august`s didn`t even get 2 dry days in a row,summer holidays for the schoolchildren has once again been crap.

Have to look to archives now as these were very wet summers,much much warmer august back in 2004 though just relentlessly unsettled though until the very end into September.

Then we had the classic summer of 2007.

August and September 2007 were both very dry and sunny months here and had notable prolonged periods without any measurable rain - very different to the two months before. There was no measurable rain between:

27th July - 12th August (17 days)
21st August - 16th September (27 days)

Followed by:

10th October - 9th November (31 days)

In fact the following was an exceptional dry period.

27th July  - 17th November - 98.0mm

This continued until January when the taps turned on again and we had 141.8mm, the wettest locally since at least 1847.

After a few reasonable days last week where average temperatures were attained, it's back to the usual modern August crap today with loads of cloud, a howling wind and feeling pretty cold. Thankfully, I'm off to Spain tomorrow. Can't wait.

They needed to be after the wettest summer in living memory never really warmed up in august with that HP settling things down,amazing memorable thunderstorms 10 years ago in june/july 2007 then the severe N-ly winds,a summer never to forget,the flooding unprecedented.

I remember that brief respite in early September 2004 - lovely spell of weather. Of course, it broke on the 10th with big downpours and was back to square one, leading to a very wet October. A much drier spell began in November however and essentially brought a series of below-average rainfall months all the way through to September 2006 bar one or two.

With just 10 days left of the meteorological summer, and no sustained warm dry conditions on the horizon, I'm reflecting on summer 2017 as a whole, and for the Lake District  it will rank as another rather poor one overall, though far from terrible. We managed some decent warmth in June, and a good number of sunny dry days, but July deteriorated rapidly after a promising start, and August looks like ending up preety bad, with hardly a break in the unsettled often cool conditions. Far from a washout though, and nothing compared to the likes of 2007, 2008 and 2012 overall, more comparable to 2015. What is the betting yet again we see a fine dry mild warm September.. with high pressure descending on us.
