Day 2 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Sat 06 Jan 2018 - 05:59 UTC Sun 07 Jan 2018

ISSUED 16:49 UTC Fri 05 Jan 2018

ISSUED BY: Dan

Upper trough over western Europe will begin to disrupt on Saturday, eventually becoming a cut-off upper low over Iberia. As a result, building heights from the north will ultimately reduce the depth of convection from north to south through the day, the best potential for any (isolated lightning) mainly over the English Channel and Celtic Sea associated with scattered showers here.

I’m very shocked. At 20:00 this evening I have 1078 J/kG of CAPE and -5 LI! Never thought I’d see those numbers outside of summer. Surprised there’s not any more activity in this thread actually.

I know, I thought there was something wrong with the website.  Plenty of sferics embedded in the last few days' rain

Saw my first ever thundersnow today, although to be fair it was more hail than snow. Very nice to see a thunderstorm in January though. Location was near to Torside Reservoir, which is just NE of Glossop.

Once got caught in Thundersnow between Owler Bar and Fox House near Sheffield it was unbelievable it was pitch black it was some of the heaviest snow i have ever seen and the winds picked up so strongly that it started buffeting my car it became a a very hairy experience i thought i was going to get stuck at one point.

Had plenty of hail and thunder from 8.45pm in north Manchester, M9  Pity I was working otherwise I would have tried to film it.

About five strikes in total, one close isolated strike at about 9.10 in the M 8 area

Ok... I may have not had any wind last night (:blink2:) but I’ve certainly got some beautiful convective cloudscapes today. :D

... Oh if only this was late spring/summer this would be looking very promising indeed. :bomb::rolleyes:

Just had a rumble of thunder from a heavy shower with hail just clearing here in south London. Some nice convective skies building up this afternoon. Fairly mild at the surface (9C) but cold mid-levels must be creating some steep lapse rates, even inland.

Another day of very strong convective cloudscapes over towards the Liverpool area. :)

Caught this shower from Portsdown Hill earlier, apparently quite a bit of hail from it.

Ahh I couldn't find this thread early this morning ..

At 6.30am we had a cracking little thunder-storm.
Torrential rain and c. half a dozen flashes and booms.
Best for years I'd say.

I’ve had a couple of notifications on my phone that we had a couple of lightning strikes during the night! Can anyone confirm this please? :)
