New Radar apps RAIN SNOW

Recommended Posts

Spotted an annoying bug yesterday, when there's a lot of lightning strikes on radar it becomes very slow to pan and zoom around, becoming completely unusable at times.

Hi Jonathan, that's something we noticed also and are looking at options to stop it from getting overloaded on those rare, busy lightning days.

I've only just realised that I haven't been getting any notifications from the app. I get none for rain in the vicinity, and I don't get push notifications for news stories. I checked all of the app settings, they're on. App notifications within Android are on. I uninstalled the app and reinstalled it, but still no notifications for rainfall. I'm not sure how long it has been like it?!

Are you using either Android Oreo or a huwaeii handset there at all @Mapantz?

I'm using Oreo, but it's on an LG V30+

Ok thanks. There's a bug affecting Oreo at the moment as it has a new way of handling notifications, Karl's working on a new version at the moment which'll fix it.

Posted (edited)

Posted feedback in the net weather radar app earlier to say push notifications icon now remain after connecting through. I'm running the  latest app on Android 7.0 but omitted to specify my device is MotoG4.

Thanks, I've seen that and will pass it over to @Karl. We did make a change to notifications in the last release as Android 8 (oreo) does them a bit differently, so it's likely related to that.

Thanks Paul. Tried it again this morning and the notification remains as well as the icon and has to be swiped off the screen even though I've clicked through.

I don't seem to be getting any precip notifications. I've had several fronts pass over since the update, but nothing alerting me. I have gone through the settings and changed delay times etc, but to no avail. I do get the news notifications though.

Sorry, meant to reply to you before now @Mapantz - looks like there was still something a bit buggy in there for Oreo devices, there's a new release going live later today which should sort it.

Had a notification for rain earlier, when showers were close by. It look's like we're back in business?! Thank you folks!

Any news on the IOS release feels like a long time since we first heard about this?

Hi @cookie, sorry I missed this. There's no news at the moment I'm afraid. While Google are fine listing an app with a login as part of a subscription that is bought on a website and not through the app itself, Apple aren't unfortunately. They require us to offer a method of subscribing through the app using their subscription system which at this time isn't compatible with how subscriptions to Extra work.

It's not going to be on hold indefinitely, but there's no eta at the moment in terms of when we'll be able to make the changes for them to accept it.

the radar for this part of the uk seems to constantly have a 'wedge' of weather being shown above Romsey, covering winchester, which is out of line, with the  actual weather in that area.. for example today it is completely bright and   dry in winchester .  This seems to be an issue with the radar station itself  at West Dean? . Is there a way you can check/ report this ?
      Many Thanks
      Alan

We've added a brand new feature to the weather radar on Netweather today, as well as the overlays for lightning and satellite images, you can now display live tweeted weather updates from twitter, making it the first social weather radar in the UK!
If you're a twitter user, using one of the following hashtags (#ukice, #uksnow, #ukfog, #ukrain, #ukstorms) along with a postcode or geo-location info in your tweet will plot it onto the radar map so you can share weather updates for your location.

This feature will also go live on the Netweather Extra radar tomorrow

It's been a while since we had any major news about the radar, so I thought today would be a good time to share some with you..

In short, although the V5 version of the radar is still fairly new and in it's final beta phase, we've decided to jump straight on to V6 and are currently working hard to put that in place. The new system will use the same mapping and zooms as V5 but will use newer technology to allow us to bring a number of new features - including many of the most requested ones from the feedback we've had on the V5 radar.

I'll go into more detail on these new features and some of the other changes in the next few weeks (including a major announcement or two) but the one change I wanted to let you know about today is a change in our lightning detection on not just the radar but across the site.

Very soon instead of our StrikeStar network we'll be changing across to use the ATD lightning detection system. Although StrikeStar has been great and provides a pretty accurate picture of lightning across the UK, we're always keen to improve what we can offer to our users and the natural progression is the ATD system which and gives even more accurate and sensitive strike detection.

Stay tuned for further announcements and updates over the coming days and weeks, we're working really hard behind the scenes at the moment and are all really looking forward to bringing these new features and improvements online very soon!

      Paul
