Unstable atmospheric conditions? We do have a small chance of storm activity this afternoon.

Day 1 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Thu 27 Jul 2017 - 05:59 UTC Fri 28 Jul 2017

ISSUED 20:25 UTC Wed 26 Jul 2017

ISSUED BY: Dan

Upper vortex will be located to the northwest of Scotland, but with a trough axis swinging eastwards across the British Isles on Thursday. As a result, cool air aloft atop relatively warm SSTs and diurnally-heated land will steepen lapse rates, allowing numerous showers to develop, some weakly-electrified.

Best mid-level lapse rates (and hence lightning potential) will be found from Wales - Midlands - East Anglia / Lincolnshire, though some uncertainty as to whether a weak feature in the morning / early afternoon could bring more cloud and some dynamic precipitation to southern parts of Britain for a time, which might have a knock-on effect to any convection for the afternoon/early evening. Given strong DLS, any heavy showers will be capable of strong, gusty winds and perhaps some small hail.

While instability will weaken from the west later in the afternoon and overnight, deep instability will return to western Scotland later in the night.

What do the two maps represent?

Obviously the British isles but I'm reading that as Low to Slight chance of convection or are they different times of day?

(Sorry...I should educate myself more on the data!)

Reading the text I may decide to drive up to Lincoln way.

Quite a close crack of thunder here but most importantly, it's the first of 2017.

Have had a recent downpour just north of Haverhill Suffolk. The heaviest precipitation was towards Linton Cambridgeshire.

Some rotation going on with this heavy downpour but sadly no tube today.

Yeah i saw earlier one of the small cells taking a right against the flow on radar and it does look like it's the one you photographed confirming visual rotation in conjunction with the radar.

Hi

A couple of rumbles from this as it passed out into the Nth Sea. The way the cloud was growing as it passed over was quite amazing.

Cheers

Glenn

Thunderstorm to the south west of Derby near Burton on Trent. Not on course to hit here, but it may just break the storm drought for some Derby folk.

Very heavy shower here about an hour ago, then a spell of warm sunshine. Now torrential again!

I just caught the edge of that storm leaving Derby, heavy rain and heard one sharp crack of thunder and saw one bright flash of sheet lightning. So I guess I'm out of the no storms club!!.5 miles north back home there's no rain at all.

Constant thunder just off the coast at Spurn now. The odd flicker of lightning seen followed by some deep booms. Must have missed us by at least 1-2 miles. Got some threatening clouds approaching from the west so hopefully a direct hit is imminent

Not that you can decipher much, but here's the radar for the Wigan postcode last night:
