This message was put out this evening...

Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service

4 hrs ·

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but we have just received the following weather warning from the Met office:-

Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across SE England later tonight and into tomorrow morning leading to difficult driving conditions, surface water flooding and isolated power outages.

Please take extra care when driving if this weather does hit us. Allow yourself more time, slow down, turn your lights on & give other vehicles more space.

Stay Safe everyone.

After all the hype (and the suffering) only a 10% storm risk! Disappointed is an understatement.

Can we all just agree the chances of severe surface based storms are over? Were left with standard elevated thunderstorm embedded rain in the early hours into tomorrow afternoon. The trough has come through too late to break the cap. Poor luck on initiation timing I'm afraid

Met Office really fall short compared to their US counterparts when it comes to what data the public are allowed to access. I am always in awe of the sheer depth of statistics available on the NOAA website for individual stations (and they have lots of stations in every city, unlike the UK where countless stations have been closed over the past 20 years, with Leeds not having an official Met station at all anymore).

Yep, they're really poor for this. The lack of data they make available infuriates me. And even the data they make available is difficult to find as their website is atrocious.

One of the best storms i've ever seen formed from literally within the hour over the Peak District back when I was little, around the time of 3am when the forecast said that the evening was going to be uneventful. Constant strobes of light lasting for well up to 30 minutes as it passed and still sticks in my mind.

Likewise a few winters back there was a trough which brought a localised thundery cell over the western Peak District and that was again out of nowhere and completely unexpected. Even now peering out the window into the low dusk-light i'm seeing a AcCas tower rising up around the Macclesfield area.

yep, it's a sad day when Scotland gets most of the action. Good thing I live there hahaha. Sorry for gloating, I just know it will be a while before we get anything significant again.

You get actual winters, you didn't suffer the heat like we did, and now you get a supercell up there. You lucky gits! :D

Liking that last Convective Weather forecast. Mind you, Netweather showing 0% chance for tomorrow, Met Office showing 30% chance of light showers with a yellow warning at 10:00am tomorrow (was showing 50% chance of storms earlier for that time) and the standard weather app on my iPhone showing a 40% chance of storms at 10:00am and then 30% from 11:00am - 12:00pm.

We'll have to wait and see

It's getting cooler now in the south - and all the cape is going. Perhaps now we'll have a huge storm? :D

Yes unfortunately the strikes were slightly North. Looks like the Patrington, Easington area got the heaviest rain. Saw the last flash offshore about 15 mins ago. Still, nice whilst it lasted!

Cheers

Important to emphasize that the Met Office yellow warning doesn't expire until 2am in the morning and anything can happen within 3 hours, personally i'm calling it a night at 3am but whatever happens my eye is fixed on the RADAR for any signs of further developments.
