Convective / Storm Discussion Thread - 31st May 2017 onwards

Recommended Posts

Storms were trying to get going here in North Manchester an hour or so ago. A few drops of nice warm rain too. Feels very humid out.

With the heat, moisture, CAPE etc I imagine things would be going nuts if it weren't for the dreaded CAP putting a lid on things.

The band of showers that passed through an hour or so ago delivered nothing to the ground, despite the radar returns. 29.4c currently. Overcast and very muggy like everybody else is reporting.

Edit: big spots of rain now.

I know I am determined to get there next year myself the lucky sod!

Question - is the trough the dry / clear bit in the Irish Sea?

The cold front is just entering Ireland now by the looks of it going by sat24, so anywhere onwards from there may well see the chance of something shooting up. Not sure where there's live charts that actually show it.

SE'ly here, upper winds westerly though, as clouds moving from west to east, certainly expect nothing here, just hot

As the saying goes; "here I sit broken hearted...."

Got a feeling things are going to go pear shaped. Lots of promise but little glory!

Humidity on the increase here, skies are looking "interesting" (well, more interesting than wall to wall blue anyway!)

Current preciptation charts look somewhat like Euro 4 charts for about the same time, just underestimating the rainfall further south. Got to say that is not good news as Euro 4, at least the 06z one, goes for virtually nothing, storm wise, away from that Scottish pulse.

Gone from blue skies to this - is it instability?

The forecast was for conditions to be right from 6pm. i.e. Now. It still takes time for storms to develop ..... chin up, old boy.

Interesting.  Got some convection going on at cirrus level.  Cirro-cumulus here with virga, if you can pick it out from my crappy phone camera photo...

I do get a sneaking suspicion that may be the case, the Meto forecast radar has nothing, whereas for the bank holiday they were bullish about the storm prospects.

The cap is proving remarkably resilient, I think if there is no breakthrough in the next two hours today could be a bust, but there is still time and I hope I am wrong.

When a white colour appears on the rainfall radar over England I think that is the time to raise eyebrows, it's all looking poised but no breakthrough yet.

Wonder if it is the start of things changing for tonight, as more reports are coming in on here of more sky's looking unstable.

Possibly.

However, this is what the Met Office said:

"There is a risk of more severe thunderstorms breaking out over parts of the Midlands, northern England and north Wales from late Wednesday afternoon onwards into Wednesday night, leading to torrential downpours, frequent lightning, very large hail and strong gusts of wind."

Now, I might be getting on a bit, but, I'm pretty sure I read that right.
