Typical, I was out all afternoon and saw nothing other than a single heavy shower while at home they had a couple of torrential downpours with plenty of thunder during the last one. Got home just after it cleared away. Noticed there was a rain rate of 122mm/hr at some point during the afternoon.

Northbound up the A30 in Cornwall (heading all the way back to Birmingham) and it's a similar picture above with dreary ol' drizzle with misty murky Stratus cloud

This is becoming a very different September than we have been used to in recent years.

Hard to tell how long the calm down at the weekend will last, but I wonder if this will be a back-to-front September like 2008 which was very similar to this in the first half, but largely dry and calm in the second half. So far, this seems most similar to 2011 with gales around the same date and generally unsettled up to this point after the fine first two days.

Several subtle changes in wind direction have made this a day of 3 distinct parts ; dawn until around midday had a WNW wind with frequent heavy (even torrential) showers and squally gusts, the wind then shifted slightly more NNW which allowed for a mostly sunny 4 to 5 hours as we hardly ever get showers from that direction before it reverted back to the WNW a few hours ago which has led to more heavy showers into this evening.

Just had a few very heavy showers this evening as Andy Brown has posted.

Max wind gust of 25mph but most of the day had gusts of 19-24mph which is BFT Force 5 Fresh breeze.

It simply cannot be dry for even 4 or 5 hours can it.

Several moderate to heavy showers in the last 3 hours and extensive cloud in between them making a mockery of hoping to get washing done and dried in what should be the warmest part of the day!

Briefly got into gusts in the 40s last night but generally gusting in the 30s so could've been worse. Nevertheless, lots of leaves, small branches and one or two trees down. Cool and showery this morning.
