I've been following this polar westerly since it first appeared in the models but only now I'm starting to feel quite excited. The charts have shown a lot of potential for a while and despite the complications of Thursday's low, the models have been quite consistent. Polar westerlies have delivered some memorable snow falls, quite recently in January 2015 with with falls of 5cm and 7cm, though generally they tend to be hit or miss. This looks to be particulary potent and quite prolonged -Met Office have snow symbols from this evening into the early hours of Wednesday and loads of heavy snow symbols aswell. I'm hopeful of at least a healthy covering of up to a couple of inches but given the potential in this set-up I'd be delighted with more than 8cm which would be the best since 2010. The low during Wednesday night is very interesting and one to keep an eye on - if it doesn't track to far north then many of could see another hefty snowfall.

Warnings appear to have been updated.

No Amber. They have upped the impact but reduced the likelihood.

Edit: Snow warning for Thursday also.

My office is at sea level in Greenock and the shower that just passed through had a bit of sleet towards the end. Promising that's happening already.

17cm?.... I would certainly take that, I'm looking forward to seeing how your predictions pan out, and I certainly won't complain if they're spot on.

Shall keep you updated with the depths.

If it was doon in London then red warnings would be issued with a COBRA meeting and the Army on standby! :nonono:

Hello all.  Had to chip in with my thoughts...  I'm cautiously optimistic that I might actually see a decent amount of the white stuff ;)  If I get really really lucky I might even need to get my boots out for the first time since 2010! If it all goes pear-shaped then oh well... but I really do have my fingers crossed!

Best of luck to everyone and hope you need your shovels and sledges!

Tim

Last bit of snow from Boxing day was holding on yesterday, awaiting for more as my old grandmother used to say. Cold and calm at the moment up here at Rheanbreck

This is the state of the UK according to London Guardian. Their 4th piece today for UK news is about londoners complaining about announcements on buses. :rofl:

Now in yellow warning zone for Storm Hoolie's snow... permission to ramp!  It mentions rural communities being cut off...

Yep just saw this, predicting possibly another 20cm from that spell wednesday into thursday over higher ground... the central belt falls right into the wind and snow warning... blizzards anyone??

Still waiting on this bloody amber warning? Surely to hell when 8 inches of snow is being forecast for some that it merits amber? The midlands got amber for the same in December, I know it doesn't effect what falls from the sky but.... I'm just all about equality ???

I think any amber warnings will be issued at fairly short notice.

Aye likely once they see how the radar is shaping up and where the most steamer activity is

Be interesting to see where the low ends up. Each run will correct it's position and it if keeps trending south (as it has on the last run I checked) then come Wednesday that warning area could be sitting over the South of England - although let's hope not :D

Fascinating model watching over the next few days - coupled with fascinating radar and lamp post watching - not often that happens in tandem :D
