I'm debating whether or not to stay up. Will the storm reach here?

I'm no weather expert, do you think it'll make Wivenhoe???

It's all to play for at the moment. It's veering NE at the moment but there's a lot of energy to tap into as it heads here. I'd say a better than 50% chance at the moment.

Heavy rain with the odd rumble of thunders what i'd describe here at the moment. Nothing compared to further east.

Looking at the movement of the lightning this evening, looks like Sussex, Kent, Essex and E Suffolk most likely to see overhead lightning tonight

These storms are horrible to watch for me, as I live in Chichester and would be prime location to chase. However I am currently in Barnstaple on holiday, a hundred miles away from the action! Shame I wasn't here Friday night!

Enjoy Fellow southerns, this really is a beaut of a storm!

I'm calling it, going to sleep with my window open so if it does get here it'll wake me up. Goodluck everyone!

I hope you are right mate.

If anyone's old enough or young and likes a war film I will quote a famous saying from fail safe which we will be using tonight ' Mr president I hear sounds of explosions coming from my south east (instead of north east) the sky is very bright all lit up BAAAAAANNNG...

Omg and heading straight towards me! Getting 20+ distant flashes per minute here now, still no rain or rumbles to be heard yet though.

So it's heading ENE along the channel mainly from what I can see and may clip the very south east of kent. The forecast mentioned storms would develop in the channel and move inland (not imports from france) and so far I haven't seen any evidence of that at all, so I recon rather frustratingly this is gonna be yet another bust which just misses me (just like the inactive cell that literally passed right over me this afternoon, drifted to essex and then fired up :wallbash:). If true, then this is especially annoying given the active nature of tonights storms is off the charts. I'm gonna hit the sack I think. Hope I am wrong and get woken up in a couple of hours to the sound of booming thunder, pounding rain and searchlight lightning.

Night all, be safe and good luck.

Cannot begin to imagine how violent the upper atmosphere must be over the English Channel right now. Not often you see a storm pushing out close to 500 strikes per minute, excluding IC and CC sferics! When all the parameters come together, nature can do amazing things.

It does detect IC/CC, I've been under storms with tonnes of sefrics but most of it was in the clouds with constant rumbling but relatively few CG's (e.g in Wiltshire last August). Friday night also showed me that again.

There isn't actually 500 CG's per minute raining down, that would be some sight! lol
Though it's still some sight as it is.

Surprised you can't hear anything yet! A few distant rumbles here...maybe it's the elevation that allows the sound to reach here?

I was going to say you should probably go east further than that right away and then I realised that from Swindon your alternative to going via the A34/M3/M27 route is... not great unless you're committed to going right the way to Brighton. So yeah, hitting the M27 and then keeping on churning along the A27 as far east as you need to is probably the way to go.

Yeap we are east bound M4 now!

Haha, there's so much lightning that the NW radar app is almost unresponsive on my phone. Too much for it to render properly.
