I thought this site might be of interest to some ,its independent weather stations over the UK ,might be a good idea to get live real time weather across the country http://www.weatherstations.co.uk/aws_map.htm

There are a lot of variables required for white fluffy stuff to fall out of the sky, but one of the most important indicators is the 500hPa thickness. This parameter needs to be 528dm or below for the chances of snow to be greater than that of rain. The lower it is the better chance. Here's the chart for 6pm tonight,

528dm.gif

All but the far eastern part of Kent is primed for snow by then - even in Eastern Kent it's still 50/50 probability. By 9pm the entire country is under 520dm air where the probability is that stuff coming out of the sky will be snow.

528dm1.gif

Of course, the forecast has to verify, and tonights event relies on this colder air arriving before the rain disappears. If the precipitation comes later, that's a good thing as it increases chances that the cold air will arrive before the rain disappears. If the low tracks more southerly, that's a good thing; it's projected warm sector is forecasted to be on it's southern side. If the low is flabby and weaker then the precipitation will be more widely distributed, another good thing, as more people are likely to see snow, albeit armageddon amounts become less likely.

 the guy who used to always ramp with the slightest bit of mild on the cards? Used to be a great watch when everyone was kicking up a stink haha. Coming upto 9 years myself, but hasn't been as interesting the last 4 years! Come on winter :cold:

Very good. There's a few of us in here from the Southend/Rochford/Leigh/Benfleet areas. Always good fun when snow is around. Lamp posts at the ready from around 6-9pm.

Indeed. He was a character and as I said above played a star role in one of the biggest LOL moments in NW history. I can't remember the year though, must of 2010 I reckon. Anyone able to dig out that thread?

Yes would be good to see him back. It will take a sniff of a Thames Streamer to get him on I reckon though...

Good morning,  south eastern contingent.

Just poped in quick.

This morning s 6z gfs has potentially the sharpest cold spell/incursion for our little part of the world in many 'a' moons -12/14 850hpas looking distinctive as we move through next week with ample opportunities for convection= precipitation in snow flurry/shower penertation.

I'll pop back in later as we move towards a possible back edgr conversion to "at least" falling snow this evening/ tomorrow. ..still lots of resolve on this yet. ..have a good en.
