Amber warning issued

Issued at: 11:22 on Fri 23 Dec 2016

Valid from: 08:00 on Mon 26 Dec 2016

Valid to: 16:00 on Mon 26 Dec 2016

Gusts of 70-80 mph, locally 90 mph are possible for a time as a swathe of particularly strong winds in associated with Storm Conor passes across the far N of Scotland and the Northern Isles, before easing through Boxing Day afternoon. There is potential for renewed travel disruption (for example bridge closures and ferry delays), disruption to power supplies, as well as large waves affecting coastal areas.

A swathe of strong winds on the southern flank of Storm Conor is likely to bring a period of enhanced winds to the far north of Scotland and Northern Isles in particular. There is a possibility of gusts in the region of 80-90mph, although there remains a degree of uncertainty because of uncertainties over the track of Conor in its final stages as it moves towards Norway.

Covers

Orkney Islands, Shetland Islands

Highland

Updated yellow warning for Conor

Issued at: 10:17 on Sat 24 Dec 2016

Valid from: 00:05 on Mon 26 Dec 2016

Valid to: 18:00 on Mon 26 Dec 2016

Further very strong winds, associated with Storm Conor, are expected through much of Boxing Day (Monday). Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are likely to occur quite widely, locally up to 70 mph. These stronger gusts are likely to be more frequent over the far north of Scotland, where there is a risk of gusts of up to 80 mph. Winds will ease from west to east through the afternoon and evening. Hill snow and rain may be additional hazards. Please be aware of the potential for disruption to travel (for example difficult driving conditions, restrictions on bridges and delays to ferry services). Other impacts, primarily across northern Scotland, may include large waves affecting coastal areas, while heavy rain in the West Highlands combined with snow melt may lead to rising river levels.

Storm Conor is expected to pass to the north of Shetland on Boxing Day bringing a broad swathe of gales and severe gales to the northern and western parts of Scotland. It will turn much colder early on Boxing Day, with blustery showers increasingly turning to snow. Local accumulations of around 3-7 cm are likely above 250 metres, with temporary accumulations of 1-2 cm possible to lower levels in the north and northwest for a time Boxing Day (Monday) morning. This warning has been updated to adjust the area covered to north of the Central Belt, and also adjust validity times.
