Storm Barbara now named for Friday and into Saturday with strong winds and heavy rain likely more so in the north west with an amber warning in force for western and northern Scotland

Issued at: 09:29 on Tue 20 Dec 2016

Valid from: 12:00 on Fri 23 Dec 2016

Valid to: 06:00 on Sat 24 Dec 2016

A spell of very strong south to southwesterly winds is expected to develop on Friday. Gusts of 80 mph are likely quite widely, with westerly winds gusting to 90 mph likely across parts of western and northern Scotland later on Friday and overnight into Saturday. Winds will then ease on Saturday morning. Be aware of the potential for some structural damage - this more likely across the northwest of the warning area - as well as disruption to power supplies and travel, with restrictions on bridges and disruption to ferries.

A deep depression, now named Barbara, will move northeastwards across the Atlantic, passing close to the northwest of Scotland later Friday and overnight into Saturday. South to southwesterly winds will increase earliest across the west of the warning area early on Friday, before the strongest winds develop across western then northern Scotland later on Friday and overnight into Saturday. The last place to see winds easing is likely to be Shetland on Saturday morning.

Storm Barbara has been officially named by the Met Office for the low arriving to north of Scotland on Friday, the north bearing the worst of the winds, their yellow and amber warnings suggesting 60-70mph gusts widely across northern areas, 80-90mph across northern and western Scotland. Strong gusts along the cold front but strongest gusts reserved for far NW closer to tight gradient beneath SW side Barbara passing to the north, though GFS wind gusts don't look quite so severe as the warning suggests away from the far NW.

Then hot on Barbara's heels, I guess it looks likely Xmas day's low maybe named Conor, which anything, looks worse than Barbara atm on GFS, with the low centre passing further south between Orkney and Shetlands

Updated amber warning

Issued at: 11:27 on Thu 22 Dec 2016

Valid from: 12:00 on Fri 23 Dec 2016

A spell of very strong westerly winds is expected to develop on Friday. Gusts of 80 to 90 mph are possible in places. Winds will then ease on Saturday morning. There is potential for some structural damage as well as disruption to power supplies and travel, with restrictions on bridges and disruption to ferries. This is an update to the warning issued on Tuesday to restrict the most damaging winds to north of the Great Glen. The warning period is now restricted to Friday.

Storm Barbara will move northeastwards across the Atlantic, passing to the northwest of Scotland during Friday. South to southwesterly winds will increase during the morning (please see separate yellow warning), but the strongest winds will develop in the afternoon as winds turn to a westerly direction.

Does anyone have a link to MSLP charts that aren't the fax charts from Met Office? Thanks!
