Sunny Sheffield up to 5C should fall tomorrow as it looks like we'll get a rare air frost tonight.

Marked differences between northern half of CET zone and southern half of CET zone over the past week which has skewed CET mean returns in favour of the milder conditions across northern stations. Indeed south east portion of the zone has been cold for 7 days now, so the CET mean as often the case isn't very representative of average conditions across the country as a whole.

I am fully expecting a marked downward adjustment this month.

Don't think it works that way. Just outside the cet zone here but just. I remember one month where the northern section was under fog while the southern area was under mild sunny temperatures. End result about a degree difference between here and the CET zone.

4.1c here to the 20th, 0.6c above the 1981-2010 average.

Some small drops likely over the coming days as we see nighttime frosts return but nothing significant.

Cant see Jan finishing below average, going by current GFS slightly above average looks likely.

Hadleys  numbers are stupidly high atm, I would expect the largest ever downward correction come months end.

I'm not sure the largest but yes there will be a significant correction. Remember the really low temperatures have been restricted to the far South and London and SE that will be reflected in the regional stats. Consider my stats compared to Hadley to the 21st;

Hadley for CET

Mean Max; 7.4c

Mean Min; 2.5c

Mean; 5.0c

Mine;

Mean Max; 7.6c (+0.7c)

Mean Min; 0.9c (-2.0c) (to the 22nd 0.6c)

Mean; 4.3c

Unless there is a real warm up in this region during the last few days the end of month regional stats will be very interesting indeed.

Here it's as follows:

Mean max: 7.5°C (+0.3).

Mean min: 3.8°C (+1.4).

Mean: 5.7°C (+0.9).

Mean min  was around 0.5°C higher before the last 2 consecutive air/ground frosts.

4.0c to the 21st, 0.5c above the 1981-2010 average.

5 day forecast looks below average, so a drop close to average is possible.

Mean Max 6.4c

Mean Min 1.3c

Only 22.6m of rain so far and cant see much forecast in the next week so possibly a very dry Jan.

Exactly Optimus. My great love is snow, but it's been an exceptional period of weather in central southern England. A series of very cold nights (minimums between -5 and -8) and temperatures no higher than 5c during the day - and sometimes much lower. All the ponds and lakes in this area are properly frozen - the canal at the end of my lane is frozen from bank to bank for the first time in the 24 years I've lived here.

Wow, didn't realise it had been that bad, like a different world up here.

Think we'll end up between 4 and 4.5c after adjustments at month end, that's on the basis of a downward correction of around 0.4c and a fairly even split of cooler and milder days up to the 31st.

My average has taken a nice hit!  4.7°C against the regional average of 4.5°C

chart.png

The fog hasn't lifted all day, so the temp maxed out at 1.4°C. A negative average temp today should lower my average nicely on tonight's update.

Its been above average here too. We haven't gone below -1.7C all month and have only had 5 air frosts.

The CET is higher than expected as the North of the CET zone has been relatively mild. I imagine Scotland and Northern Ireland will have had quite a mild January overall.
