I took this screenshot about 3pm, funny seeing the UK mostly average to mild yet just across the channel it was sub-zero in the middle of the afternoon.

Of course in the summer this contrast happens the other way round.
I wouldn't be surprised if we see some similar patterns in the coming weeks now... High and inversion cold just to our SE, deep cold in eastern/SE Europe.

Though hopefully we can still get decent frosty weather, and colder than average conditions, looking on the positive side. Hard to have much confidence after recent occurrences though.

Not surprising to see cold to the east & western Europe misses out. Always said that from Berlin eastwards and you tend to do well for cold in Winter. The further west you go from Berlin & it would seem becomes increasingly hard to get something decent. The ECM 120hr chart sums it up perfectly!

Erm......your post sums up the normal winter weather for Europe. That is the continental climate.

Looking at the BBC 10 day forecast for this part of South Devon and below average daytime temps pretty much all the way after tomorrow. Not bad going really!

Our cat has also been acting really weird the past few days and not wanting to go out much at all. My personal view is that he can smell the cold coming...:yahoo:

Wouldn't it be funny if he was right?

Shockingly bad ECM this morning, dominant PV to the north by T240 and euro heights (Iberia up to U.K.) throughout.

There is no question that if I see "trigger low" or "easterly incoming" this morning I will rapidly lose the will to live. I can now add "all to play for" to the list.

Happy new year all :)

Well it looks like we dropped the batten on the second handover regarding the potential cold!!  We need to get it all the way round and finish in first to actually see some cold and snowy weather to verify in this country.

So we dust ourselves off, take a breath, and set off from the start again.

Heres hoping the next eight weeks can deliver a gold medal eh.

have a great New Year's Day everyone.

Just demoralising isn't it? Always jam tomorrow.

However, I don't subscribe to the view that we're becoming more 'snowless' but can't get excited over 3 day snowy events.

2010/1991/1978/9 type events once in a while are the only thing that keep me interested.
