Maybe you weren't in the UK? 12/13 was one of the snowiest winters I can remember. Not particularly cold but battleground after battleground just on the right side of marginal.

Not down here it wasnt.

I'm 55. The best Winters (cold and snow) were 62/63 (cant remember i was only 1+ yrs); 78/79, 81/82, 87, 91, 95, 09/10 and 10/11.

That is 8 winters in 55. Nuff said.

Aye, 2012/13 was a funny one: usually, it probably wouldn't be all that memorable; so, I guess it must be down to the fact that it contained more snow-days on its own, than all of the subsequent winters combined?

Yep 2012/2013 was much better with decent snow, especially so in mid Jan. Sadly, I lived in Madrid where it fell as rain.

A nadir has been reached. People are now impersonating Old Met Men. :shok: Is nothing sacred?

Yes, that does seem weird.  Or has Old Met Man re-registered as Old MET Man?  I don't see the point of copying such a distinctive monicker....

Further to my communique of yesterday regarding a NW glossary. One should be aware of very recent events where a transient Atlantic ridge has morphed into a Greenland high which has predictable been accompanied by surges on the 'potential' and ;'building block' scales.

Been here many times before Knocks only to see the cold air quickly pushed East down the North Sea.

I am most certainly not on board with any proper Greenland High yet.

True MS I too refuse to get on board,so many times it ends in toys been thrown.

On the plus side the last two GFS runs you just have to say wow even if it fails to

78/79

81/82

I was 5 and 7 And remember both these winters well by the photos my mum took

81/82 i think started my snow addiction off lol

I remember a whole school playground having a snowball fight with around 10 inches on the ground

87 was decent to snow on ground for 2 weeks

Just to note the GFS(P) also highlights the Arctic surge SE across N. America which kick starts the rapid ridging in the western Atlantic and, if this is the case, why transient is the percentage play.

I see the inevitable downgrades have begun over in the model thread...much wailing and gnashing of teeth to be expected tonight.

Nothing wrong with a bit excitement, let's face it there's been nothing to shout about for coldies so far, however many of us have been here before with the old Atlantic ridge and the main jet running over the top.

This is what would excite me

I don't think we are anywhere in that ball park currently.

No one should be expecting a proper Greenland high anyway, plenty of wise heads have explained why it cannot happen.

The most that has ever been likely is a short lived toppler or North Westerly.

Well a few weeks ago we had "1962/63 didn't start until xmas so chill out".......I'm guessing the 1947 excuse will be wheeled out soon? "it didn't start until 3rd week of Jan." :help:

Anyway I'm going to enjoy xmas now, have a good one all. :santa-emoji:

Heres a more honest if less PC reaction to todays GFS

:wallbash:

it's as zonal as hell, to be expected in the large teapot! 2016 now, everybody knows cold spells are becoming rarer, snow getting less as years go on, at least in the south!

On the eve of the warmest recorded temperature in the UK, a climate expert who was interviewed on radio 4 was asked the question 'why'. The answer.....' Its the direction of the wind'.

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall.
