Im not so sure about that. We have had 3snow events this winter so far bringing more snow in each event than we normally have as a total of each winter.

Charts are indicate that the extreme cold of the US will leave its shores and be displaced over Europe.

Beasts from the easts are not the only direction that brings extreme cold snd snow.

For me this model watching has been fascinating with a lively atlantic been tempered by a wobbly  jetstream. We will get st least one severe cold spell.

Quite right! In fact most are dry, cold and useless. The fun comes from the west when it tries to get milder normally.

C and E US is cold continental in winter but the Pacific NW is like NW Europe, mild maritime. Very occasionally, we get brief cold and snow. Mostly it is mild and wet, always has been with few exceptions. Though December 2017 was much better than many previous Decembers for snow.

Just out of interest the ecm run ends with a 300mb jet knocking on 200kts running across the Atlantic dipping SE just west of Cornwall. Abandon hope all yee who enter here.

Prognosis for this winter is the best since 2012/13. Can the second half see something special to match that winter or even better it? Even though 2014/15 saw a lot of polar westerly flow the jet was not as meridional and that’s a big plus on our side going forward

December was a poor month for lying snow in east Yorkshire.dont know about all parts of east Yorkshire, but in hull we had no days of snow cover.last time we had what I call an heavy fall of snow in hull was the beginning of December 2010.very poor since.

Not that it's likely to happen like this at day 9!, but from an IMBY perspective the GFS's unusually cold westerly is quite interesting..

The freezing level and experience tells me that would be snow showers to sea level even in the SW (and there'd be big and heavy showers...).
It would even stay at/below freezing in between them on the moors, not bad.. and better than any of the the (often exaggerated) easterly charts I saw posted.

Yes, wasting their time imo. Can't see anything too much of interest atm. But I never really believed this winter would ever be up to too much. Early 2020s , perhaps 2019 are the yrs to watch imo.

I see the Easily Changed Mind model is projecting a cold easterly again at only 10 days out.

People from places like New York are flocking to Florida to get away from the cold. I doubt New Yorkers are jumping with joy.

That being said, Miami is currently sitting at 19C with rain. Sunseekers will be very disappointed with that! I saw news stories from Miami of locals bundling up in coats because daytime temperatures were below 20C. They weren't happy at all about that.

Dear Aunty NW. Can you help? Recently, on a boozy night out, I met a girl called Easy M. She paid for my drinks all night, took me home, showed me a side to her that left nothing to the imagination and promised me a future I hardly dared dream of. Impulsively, I asked her to marry me on the spot. Then, a week before the wedding, she ran off with my best friend Geoff. Unfortunately, GeofF'S a highly-paid American model but isn't the most reliable. So I licked my wounds, pulled myself together, and started going out with this lovely girl, a UK Model, who wasn't quite so progressive as Easy M (if you know what I'm saying) but we still had a great time and the days (and nights) passed quickly. She was happy go lucky, lived for the moment, didn't look too far ahead, and was never too frosty. Now, Easy M has become unfeasibly jealous, dumped Geoff, and wants me back so badly she's started to dress and even look just like my UK Model. I know it makes sense to stick with the partner I've come to respect and appreciate but Easy M just looks so damn good...especially when I see her in the distance. Should I get back with ECM or stay loyal? Oh, and by the way, GF'S been on the phone and says he may have been wrong after all and we should be friends again. Just don't know what to do....

The ecm in the early ext period can only be described as model porn with the center of the high over Kazakhstan, ridging into the Ukraine, whilst the trough nestles over north west Europe. Oh my giddy aunt Sidney

Suspect tomorrow will have some very excitable or depressive people. But since I will be in the north celebrating Christmas, I won't get to view it.

The Moldovan squirrels have been enjoying winter thus far and are beginning to wonder why they don such warm coats ;-)

Well I sure hope ECM is correct because everything is ready to bloom here in Central Europe. It's extremely warm and killing mosquitoes at the beginning of the January is certainly not something I enjoy.

Given the latest ECM 10 day chart and the debate over the last few days regarding the easterly, thought it might be fun to assess the mood of the forum. What would ye rather,

A . Crewe Gold coming out from a barrel full of tits sucking his thumb.

B. Steve Murr manfully attempting to put lipstick on a pig.

Dont have to clog the thread up with detailed explanations, simply put A or B at the bottom of yer post and the info will be collated into two groups.

A.Realists/ Pragmatists/Naysayers/ Told you so Narrators.

B.Idealists/Romantics/ Dreamers/ Winter Poet Warriors.

Thanks in advance.

The mod thread gets more like Only Fools & Horses every winter. "This time next year (actually week), we'll be millionaires".
