I think the term 'milder' is probably overdoing it slightly. I would say less cold, but even down here, it looks to be around average by day for this coming week. If you compare that to the same week last year, i'm looking at 5 or 6 degrees lower than that. I suspect a few degrees lower up North. Nothing to really complain about if you don't want mild weather.

Don't let them kid you ,it's not always colder up north,it's just wetter

Total non event here in Yorkshire..although as the runs progressed this week it was clear that we were going to miss out...ah well there's always next 'winter' as I've a feeling the cold may not return again!?

Does anyone know what came of when Piers Corbyn's 'magical mystery method' was tested (and presumably verified) against the real models? It all seemed to go very quiet...:cc_confused:

Gutting. I left Birmingham today and won't be returning for a month. I happen to leave the day before what would have been the heaviest snowfall I'd have ever seen there, and now I'll be getting nothing :(

I spoke too soon. We have four inches here currently :)

Haven't heard about this. Was this a recent thing?

It was a few years back. I'd forgotten all about it until the other day...

I heard that the testing got delayed. It would appear that his brother Jeremy uses the same theory in his economic modelling and the plan is to test it after the next election. What could possibly go wrong :bomb:

Well if that's what we call cold weather, it was atrocious. On to much milder weather rather than cold rain.

Rant over..

First the Ramp - Snowy in Cheltenham where two main A roads were closed as too dangerous. The A 40 Cheltenham - Oxford road pretty much a no go zone. Lots of lovely snow.

Rant - No sign of any gritters or ploughs clearing the A40. These are main roads so love to know what Local Authorities have to say.

Moan - Unable to drive to Oxford. Took the wife 12 hours to get from Gatwick to Cheltenham. Combination of snowy M40 and abandoned cars, train delays from Oxford to Reading, and delays & crowded trains from Reading to Cheltenham.

Ideally  the week prior to Christmas would be cold, bright and frosty. people can get out and about with their xmas shopping etc . Mild ,wet  ,atlantic crap is no good to man or beast.

Must be the only member in the NW of the UK that hasn't had a DROP of snow in this cold spell. Missed out on all those showers Thursday and Friday, and obviously the slider today!! Bloody raging doesn't cut it!

First ice day of the season today however, with a max of -4°C.

Currently -7°C now and a little misty.

ECM control and EPS mean showing some toasty temps on the run up to Christmas.

????

I'd be curious to see the charts for that, the only chart I can find on the ECM 12z run that has the UK in +ve 850s is this one at D8...

By D10 it's back to...

ECM0-240.GIF?10-0

No hugely cold by any means, but I fail to see how the temps are going to be "toasty".

Well still waiting for my first lying snow since March 2013, yet an inch lay a 10 minute drive away so not all bad.

I'll take this over a winter of endless sliders that miss here. Just as long as it doesn't rain. There is really nothing worse than rain. Even if everywhere else in the UK had 10 feet of snow and I had 0, I would still be happier than if it was raining.

No moaning from me folks: my reverse psychology jinxes all worked (do not buy Davos sledge, leave a full load of washing on the line, leave new Christmas tree and half a load of logs out on the drive uncovered): so the result was a full day of snow, sledging, winter fun and exercise, plus the joy of finding out in the evening that all local schools have a Snow Day today. Proper Winter. Proper Snow. Narnia. Yesterday: all buses cancelled so Christmas Shopping in Oxford not possible, today, buses are running so sneaky extra shopping day/sledging on alternative pistes now a possibility. Very happy :-)

Thats because you didn't look at the control or EPS mean, both of which go to day 15.

My comment was light hearted as well!....what's not to like about a good snow fall? It is winter after all! Dam sight more comfortable than 30c plus temps in my opinion!

whats not to like about a good snowfall?.... days of slush or ice, the cold, the cold, THE COLD... high heating bills, dangerous roads and footpaths, being stuck inside unable to work or metal detect.  the fall itself is fun, and for a couple of hours after its finished. then though its just a vile frozen/wet mess. :p
