The first batch of stormy weather has disappeared we are now left with xmas day in deep FI which looks very potent. Whether that will survive the journey to around T144 is another question.

Dopey post this one yup it stills shows it to be windy in the early hours of Friday over the north west of Scotland and Ireland possibly 60 mph gusts. Lets see how it goes as it moves into the reliable time frame of T96

I wonder the storm on Christmas could get named or not.

Cold and blustery westerly winds are expected to bring heavy and frequent wintry showers across northern and western Scotland on Wednesday and Thursday. Gales are likely at times along the west coast and the Northern Isles with winds gusting to around 55 mph. The strongest of the winds should ease later on Thursday. Frequent lightning may be an additional hazard across the Northern and Western Isles and the west coast in particular with the potential for disruption to power supplies. Upland areas are expected to see some appreciable snowfalls with accumulations of 5 to 10 cm possible on higher routes across the western and central Highlands. Some slushy accumulations are also possible at lower elevations at times. Ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces on Wednesday night into Thursday morning,

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A cold and blustery westerly airstream will bring a range of possible hazards through this period, including possibility of frequent lightning as well as snowfall over higher routes and ice on untreated surfaces. Therefore please be aware of possible disruption to travel and to power supplies.

Covers

Orkney Islands, Shetland Islands

Na h-Eileanan Siar, Highland

Argyll and Bute

Perth and Kinross, Stirling

Yellow warning issued for Christmas day

Issued at: 09:42 on Wed 21 Dec 2016

Valid from: 09:00 on Sun 25 Dec 2016

Valid to: 23:59 on Sun 25 Dec 2016

A further spell of very strong southwesterly winds is expected on Christmas Day (Sunday). Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are likely to occur quite widely, including to the east of high ground. Gusts of 60 to 70 mph will probably affect parts of northern Scotland, with a lower likelihood of gusts exceeding 80 mph across the far north of the mainland but quite possibly affecting the Northern Isles. Be aware of the potential for disruption to holiday travel plans (for example restrictions on bridges and delays to ferry services). Other impacts may include disruption to power supplies, the occurrence so soon after Storm Barbara is unlikely to help in this respect, large waves affecting coastal areas, while heavy rain in the West Highlands combined with snowmelt may lead to rising river levels.

A deepening depression will move northeastwards across the Atlantic, passing northern Scotland during the Christmas period and bringing a broad swathe of gales and severe gales to much of northern Britain. There remains a fair degree of uncertainty in the exact track and intensity of the depression, which reduces confidence concerning the threat of particularly strong winds across the far north.

Friday looks the major day for the storm a down grade for xmas and push further south. So upgrade for us on Xmas day. We may get a 60 mph gust but more likely 50 or slightly above so not bad in Sunny Sheffield.

The Christmas Day storm looks to be back on the latest GFS run, winds aren't exactly the 90mph+ that were showing before but there's still the potential for 80mph across Central Scotland, which is great for me but horrible for Christmas commuters. We'll see what the next run brings as everything is chopping and changing.

Yellow wind warning for Christmas day and early boxing day

Issued at: 11:50 on Thu 22 Dec 2016

Valid from: 03:00 on Sun 25 Dec 2016

Valid to: 09:00 on Mon 26 Dec 2016

A further spell of very strong winds is expected on Christmas Day (Sunday). Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are likely to occur quite widely, locally up to 70 mph. There is a lower likelihood of gusts exceeding 80 mph across the far north of the mainland and the Northern Isles. There is potential for disruption to holiday travel plans (for example restrictions on bridges and delays to ferry services). Other impacts, primarily across northern Scotland, may include disruption to power supplies and large waves affecting coastal areas, while heavy rain in the West Highlands combined with snow melt may lead to rising river levels. This warning has been updated to extend the validity time into Boxing Day (Monday).

A deepening depression will move northeastwards across the Atlantic, passing northern Scotland during the Christmas period and bringing a broad swathe of gales and severe gales to much of Scotland. There remains a fair degree of uncertainty in the exact track and intensity of the depression, which reduces confidence concerning the threat of particularly strong winds across the far north. Turning much colder later Christmas Day (Sunday) and into Boxing Day (Monday) morning, with blustery showers increasingly turning to snow. Some slight accumulations of around 2-4 cm are possible above 200 metres.

Sunrise over the exceptional vortex structure of the very deep and intense cyclone over the N Atlantic. The system has reached central pressure below 940 mbar and likely below 930 mbar, making this a truly rare and exceptional event! Image: EUMETSAT

Metoffice chart was showing 929mBar this morning, and predicted to be 930mBar by 12noon today. I am not sure how they derive these figures, but by all accounts a major storm

Are people asleep at the wheel here!?

Looks like a stormy day on Thursday, probably the most severe storm of the season.

Doris is finally on her way.

I'll be quite happy to have that, exactly how that chart shows it. I've just put up a better pole on my chimney, for the anemometer. I'm in need of some strong winds, particularly from that direction, because my anemometer had reading issues from around WNW. :D
