Hmmmm the meto is pretty much going for rain for the majority of the north of England on their latest video forecast. With any snow confined to Scotland or the tops of the hills but no mention of accumulation south of Scotland. With The band turning to snow on the back end but mostly a freezing rain fest. Judging from past experience I'm inclined to agree but it seems so up in the air what with the five day automated forecast showing heavy snow all day in Leeds.

So the Met office forecast was actually spot on.

Over estimated the freezing rain but considering the surface conditions its understandable.

It was the other models that led us up the garden path.

Get yourself onto Blakey Ridge mate, fairly deep here in places, new winter tyres worked a treat.

Not for our area. Overdid the snow by a large amount i.e none even on the higher ground. This was despite the upper temperatures clearly not supported Snow for days in advance. Freezing rain wasn't as bad as forecast possibly because the warm air was warmer than expected so it didn't have a chance to coll down enough when re-entered the colder air. They didn't do very well overall.

Are the winds set to increase overnight for our region?

I don't think they're expected to increase much from current speeds. Winds should ease later in the night.

At what point will the temperatures start to increase to melt away the freezing rain??

We’re in a milder sector of air now so temperatures should hold up above freezing tonight, the same goes for dewpoints too.

total fail by MO. other day said snow!

never said they changed their 5cm of snow to just freezing rain.

and used the words snow n blizzards just this morning which never happened in our region! amber warning never needed yet again. yes very icy but nothing ott. main roads r fine!

ps. sumone cancelled a comcert earlier. was never ever any need to!! its a bit of cold rain with ice in the far suburbs.

I’ve been reading sobering reports of a serious multi-vehicle accident between J33-34 on the M1 earlier this evening- during the hazardous weather

@sausage the warnings highlight the risk and are not a guarantee that you’ll see the conditions described. They are there so people are aware and can take appropriate precautions should the risk materialise. Given the clear justification and evidence for an Amber warning, I think this was far from a fail. What if it had been underestimated? Imagine the backlash then! They have to factor in the worst-case scenario based on the available data.

A bit of thought and maturity goes a long way in these situations

Temps rising fast now. Been 0c all day and now up to 6c.

Always strange when it's an overnight rise I feel!

Agree. Had a drive up Snake Pass and even at 500m+ no snow cover at all...just some sleet and wet snow on windscreen. If it ain't snowing there then it's an epic fail IMO.

Unfortunately if it wasn't such a widespread lack of snow country wide it wouldn't have been so bad. The uppers didn't support Snow for days ahead so why they had forecast it only they know. Perhaps they should have used John Holmes guide they would have got it right if they had.

Merry Christmas everyone!

I hope you are all having a safe and happy day.

Let's hope January brings us some snow. Was nice to see a hard frost on the car last night but unfortunately even that had melted by the morning!

Let's hope next year brings us what we crave ?️

Merry Chrimbone Chris, its been a pretty dismal start to winter for coldies.

Luckily were only a third of the way into winter so no need to throw in the towel just yet.
