Hi, supposed to be travelling to Manchester Airport from Mirfield by taxi on Saturday morning at 5.30am. I know there is no way of knowing exactly how much snow and where it will fall but what are people’s thoughts on making this journey. Roughly how much snow is forecast overnight Friday? I presume the worst hit area is going to be the Pennines and the M62!!!

For the sake of £50 I would book into a hotel on Friday evening at or near the airport. There is no guarantee of any snow but the m62 is an extremely delicate piece of infrastructure which can go t*ts up at any point.  It all depends on how much you value piece of mind... the forecast does suggest Saturday early hours is highly likely to see snow. The latest HIRLAM illustrates this well with a line of heavy snow down the pennines straddling the m62.

Thanks for that, that’s what I was thinking. Might just check the forecast in the morning and make a decision then.

OK stupid question but one I'd like to ask.....

Friday will be wet with rain to start with and the ground is quite waterlogged already.

Rain will turn to snow Saturday.

But will it be too wet for it to stick?

It's never too wet to stick! Temperatures will drop rapidly after 12am Saturday morning so any snow after 1am will stick nicely

To be taken with a pinch of salt but met office app for me now going for heavy snow from 11pm tonight to 3am tomorrow. Thereafter light snow all the way through to Sunday.

Not bad for mid-march!

Met office is updating the warnings.

Looks like an Amber is coming for parts of our region for tomorrow, going on the updated yellows. Also Wind warning now over Lancashire and very western most parts of the region.

Amber is out - Covers South Yorkshire, East Yorkshire and almost all West Yorkshire.

Starts 16:00 Sat till 10:00 Sunday.

Quote

Snow accumulations will be variable across the area as showers are expected to organise into bands. Whilst some areas will receive relatively small amounts of snow, narrow bands of 5-10 cm of snow are likely, with a chance of 15 cm over higher ground. Strong easterly winds will result in some drifting of lying snow, and lead to a significant wind chill. Showers are expected to become more isolated through Sunday morning.

Remember the last time we went under Amber-It got delayed by a day by which time the Amber warnings had expired-i sense the kiss of death is about to happen again!

With the previous beast an Amber warning for my area resulted in about 1cm of snow (followed by 20cm whilst under a yellow warning). Hopefully it'll be different this time!

And, of course, almost all of Lincolnshire.

Prefer to be under a yellow warning going by past experience ?....

Yep. Amber warnings are the kiss of death for snow chances! The number of times amber warnings for snow in my area have been wrong far outweigh those that have been correct.

Whatever happens is a bonus as I assumed the snow last week would be the end of winter!
