I was 14 in 91 and it was amazing. However I always think back to the Jan 95 event. Here in Leeds it started as very heavy rain. Around 5pm it turned to heavy snow and by 8.30pm (yes 3 hours) we had 40 centimetres!!!!!!

I get very angry when people say "yes but it won't lay it's too wet". This event always springs to mind

January 1995 is something I do remember and it really was unbelievable. Would love to see a repeat one day.

Here's a write-up of the event I found on someone's blog:

Quote

On that day I had collected Emily, then aged six, from school and taken her back to the agency’s office with me for a little while.

It was a cold, grey day but there was no snow. The office we were in then had no windows, so I only found out that it had started to snow when my mother rang to tell me. But since she does tend to panic about any kind of weather, I didn’t pay her a lot of attention and carried on working for another twenty minutes or so whilst Emily drew pictures in felt-tipped pen.

Then Emily and I left to go home, leaving my colleague Lucia to carry on working: she was planning to get a bus back to Headingley later on.

The office was on the first floor and we went down the stairs and looked out of the front door. Outside was a howling blizzard in which I could see nothing. We fought our way to the car and then I rang Lucia from my first ever mobile to tell her to come out immediately.

She did, and we set off to take her to Headingley and then go home.

We inched our way along crowded roads – everyone, it seemed, had had the same idea at the same moment, so our progress was painstakingly slow. The snow had taken everyone by surprise and the roads had not been gritted. Every few yards there were abandoned cars by the side of the road and I remember one particularly icy patch where the two cars in front of me simply could not get across it and pulled to the side. I was determined to get through and my magnificent Micra skidded a bit but got over the ice and out the other side.

It was very hard to see where I was going and I was just concentrating very hard on not sliding into the car in front in the nose-to-tail traffic. I was really quite scared, mostly because I had Emily in the car. I thought that if all else failed I could have walked home, but she would not have been able to walk all that way.

Emily did seem to realise that I couldn’t try to entertain her as I usually tried to do when driving, and was very quiet. Then, fortunately, she fell asleep. We dropped off Lucia in Headingley and I had to make a quick decision as to whether to stay put with her or to carry on – I opted for carrying on since I realised that another half an hour and the roads would be totally impassable.

It took us about two and a half hours for what would normally be a twenty-minute journey, but we got home at last.

The West Yorkshire Playhouse became a place of sanctuary for hundreds of stranded people that night, and a friend of ours was trapped in his car on an isolated road – the battery simply ran down. Fortunately he was rescued by some people who lived nearby and they invited him in.

That was the last big snowfall in the city. Since then, there has been snow from time to time, but it has never lasted very long and has certainly never caused such chaos. I am beginning to think that I won’t see snow like that in Leeds again, and that is a strange thing to be thinking.

I was 17 during the Feb 91 event. I watched the famous ian mckaskill countryfile forecast on Sunday the 3rd Feb and the severe cold spell was nailed on. By shear coincidence our A level geography fieldwork trip to hawes in the Yorkshire dales was booked for weds 6th Feb which was when the beast from the east first made UK landfall. I couldn't believe how lucky I was for the trip to coincide with this incredible weather event. It was booked months before. The morning of the 6th was freezing cold with snow pellets on the ground here in Dewsbury. As the journey went on snow showers started to gain frequency and as we went higher up into the hills, we could see the snow accumulating. When we reached hawes late morning, there was a lull and the snow showers abated. There was brilliant sunshine but the most perishing easterly wind. We arrived back at school at teatime and by then the weather was absolutely frigid. I walked home as the sun was setting with a feeling of great excitement as I knew the blizzards were forecast to set in overnight. What followed was over 48 hours of continuous heavy, drifting snowfall. Absolutely magical.

I believe some rural towns n villages could be cut off I think even big town hull could be in big trouble anyone else thinking same

We are a city. But yeah hull is  Deffo in the firing line for a lot of snow. I want it to be very snowy but part of me does not as I drive coaches for a living and it will be a nightmare. But I also want to build that snow man with my son. So yeah split feelings but so excited!

Oh my gosh!!

have you seen the 18z. I mean it’s got to 186hrs and is showing this in terms of cover. Ok I get it’s not the most accurate but this is weather porn....15 inches of snow pretty much across the whole of York’s. This may be one for the history books!

....and it continues JFF (just for fun) of course. But look we are at 210 hrs and 30-40 inches and still building. Same colour shade as the Alos and Norway across Yorks! Lol

A weather warning has been released for Tuesday for Yorkshire (as well as Lincolnshire).

Quote

Showers or longer periods of snow will affect eastern parts of the UK during Tuesday. There is the potential for travel delays on roads, with some stranded vehicles and passengers, as well as delays or cancellations to rail and air travel. Some rural communities could become cut off. Power cuts may also occur and other services, such as mobile phones, may be affected.

Currently a high impact, low confidence forecast. As we get closer to Tuesday we might see an amber warning issued if confidence is higher.

The 00z GFS once more is picking up a feature coming through the UK on Tuesday morning. This could be a good snow producer, has shown this for 3 or 4 runs now.

So when will we see first flakes of snow? I'm going for first flurries to start on east coast during Sunday spreading inland overnight leaving us waking up to a sprinkling/dusting on Monday morning.
